The Christian Life: Set God-based New Year’s Goals

The Life of a 21st Century Prophet

Set God-based New Year’s Goals

By: Denise N. Fyffe

It is the last month of the year, and we are down to the wire. As we begin our countdown to a new year, let us remember to get the mandate for our lives, from God. Especially as we consider making New Year’s goals and resolutions!

Usually, at this time of the year, I am listening out for God to instruct me on what will happen in the coming year or seasons, and what He wants me to do.

Over the last week and a half, God has been speaking to me about goal setting. Not only has he infused my senses and my thoughts with this focus, but He even aligned my daily sermons and podcasts – which I sometimes chose at random – to this topic as well.

He is not only encouraging us to set goals for the new year but to do so with the right motive.

His motive!

Usually, we set goals from a place of fear, or selfishness. They are usually based on what we want to accomplish or get. We might want a new house, a new car, a bigger bank account, or even a trip to Cancun, Mexico. Nothing is wrong with these goals – however …

What about setting goals that are about what God wants for our lives?

Examine closely every nook and cranny of your existence and submit it to Him. Set your lens on your – financial, psychological, physical, mental, emotional – even your academic pursuits.

As you think about this, here are several questions to guide you.

  • Will this goal honor God?
  • Will it require faith?
  • Is this goal motivated by love (for others)?

Do you want a bigger bank account simply to buy more stuff? Or do you plan to sow more into the church and what God wants to do in the earth? Will you use his resources to feed, clothe and provide for the needs of your family, friends and even a stranger in need?

If Jehovah knows that you will finance his church, then He can easily transfer anything you want from his limitless resources.

Let me share this testimony.

Just a few years ago, God started to send lots of clothes my way. Most could not fit me or were not for my gender, so I knew they weren’t for me. But, I have always had the desire to start volunteering again. To give back to the community.

Already, I was distributing food to the poor and needy on a monthly basis. But now, God was sending dozens of clothing items.

So, I decided to honor him and follow his lead. Over the next couple of years,  – with a steady God directed supply of clothes coming from all over the world and Jamaica – I was able to redirect these resources to various church ministries and people who were in need.

I did not have to spend money to buy any of these items. All it required of me, was to drive and do pickups and drop offs.

I urge you to keep the basic tenets in mind as you seek Jehovah for His will, for your life. Remember to ask the questions below.

  • Will this goal honor God?
  • Will it require faith?
  • Is this goal motivated by love (for others)?

Think big! Let the Great I Am prove His sovereign power in your life.

Rather than settling for:

  • Salary of $15,000, set a target $75,000 or more. (Your tithe increases substantially and you can give more to your church ministry. )
  • Bachelors degree in 5 years, set a target for a Doctorate in 7 years.

Think Big!

Do not worry about HOW! That is God’s job. Just make sure you set God-based New Year’s goals.

Be encouraged.

For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;

That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
