There is nothing that can be substituted for sleep.
Over these last couple of days, it has been difficult to get my seven to eight hours of sleep. I have been sleepless in Baltimore.
Working the nightshift has truly opened my eyes – literally – to how difficult it is to change the body’s circadian rhythm. No matter how I lay still, turn off the lights or have gone days with no more than three hours of sleep, my body just won’t lay still.
But today, I was victorious!
They were only six hours worth, but it did wonders.
When you are tired and miss many hours of sleep, you start to feel as if someone is putting you through a torture chamber. And that someone is YOU!
Your eyes feel like its hatching sand. Your brain can’t hold on to thoughts. Your body feels 50 lbs heavier and food is the last thing on your mind.
Man was made to abide by some eternal principles. Going against any of them puts us in danger and missing sleep puts your enter body in danger.
With the coronavirus spreading like the ten deadly plagues of Egypt, I am mindful that no matter the demands for my time, I must sleep to remain in optimum health. Sure, I could rely on the manifold blessings of God, speak declarations over my life, speak good health over myself, and push through with an indomitable spirit.
But doing that alone and continuing to ignore the eternal principles, and not rest as much, would be a fallacy and an act of idiocy on my part.
Remember those eternal principles I spoke about. Sleeping is mandatory. When you miss sleep, all kinds of bad consequences start to steamroll your life.
Health Problems Due to Sleep Deprivation
If you are like me, you get very serious, less patient, less tolerant of foolish things and foolish people. Your mind does not function at it’s best. You forget things easily. You might get sick easier. You make poor decisions or choices and a whole list of other consequences come to bear.
Some other complications which can affect your physical and mental health include:
- Heart disease
- High blood pressure
- Heart attack
- Irregular heartbeat
- Heart failure
In your marriage, you will find that your partner might be complaining about feeling ignored, a lack of attention, issues with sex, affection and any number of issues, which might also lead to arguments.
Because you are not as alert, you may also have concentration, reasoning, and problem-solving issues.
God created man to rest as well as work.
In Genesis, we even learn of how God himself rested on the seventh day. He set the first example, so that man would understand, rest and sleep are necessary.
2 And on the seventh day, God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.
3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
– Genesis 2:2 NKJV
So when the demands of life are pressing on you, make the decision to not suffer yourself and put yourself at risk, by missing sleep.
Don’t be sleepless in Baltimore, like I have.
If you have difficulty sleeping at times, and you need to be exhausted before you can close your eyes – like me – then make more opportunities to simply relax and rest.
While we sleep the body works to repair and rejuvenate itself. This is important. Cells, organs, and entire organisms within us need a couple hours to restock, refuel, and rebuild. In addition, your spirit also requires a connection with God to restock, refuel, rebuild and rejoice.
