Examining the History and Meaning behind Easter
By: Denise N. Fyffe
Easter is one of the most important celebrations in the Christian calendar, marking the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. It is a time of joy, hope, and new beginnings, and is celebrated by Christians around the world. In this article, we will explore the history and meaning behind Easter, with the help of Bible verses.
How Did Easter Begin?
The history of Easter dates back to the earliest days of Christianity. According to the Gospels, Jesus was crucified and died on a Friday, which is now known as Good Friday. He was buried in a tomb, but on the third day, Sunday, he rose from the dead, and his resurrection is celebrated as Easter.
The story of Easter is a powerful reminder of God’s love and power, and his ability to overcome death and sin. The resurrection of Jesus is seen as a triumph over death, and a sign of hope and new life for all who believe in him.
One of the most famous Bible verses about Easter is found in the Gospel of John, chapter 11, verse 25. In this verse, Jesus is speaking to Martha, the sister of Lazarus, who had just died. Jesus tells her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.”
Another important Bible verse about Easter is found in the Gospel of Mark, chapter 16, verses 5-7. This passage describes the discovery of the empty tomb by the women who had come to anoint Jesus’ body. An angel appears to them and says, “Don’t be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.'”
These verses remind us of the power of the resurrection, and the hope and new life that it brings. They also encourage us to believe in Jesus and to trust in his promises.
Today, Easter is celebrated in many different ways around the world. In many countries, it is a time of feasting and celebration, with special foods and traditions. In Christian churches, it is a time of joyful worship and reflection, as believers gather to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus and to give thanks for the new life that it brings.
As we celebrate Easter this year, may we remember the history and meaning behind this important holiday, and may we be renewed in our faith and hope in Jesus Christ. May we also remember the words of the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:17, which says, “And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.” Let us rejoice in the truth of the resurrection, and may it bring hope and new life to all who believe.
Be Encouraged.
Bible Study:
Mark, chapter 16, verses 5-7 is a passage from the Bible that describes the discovery of the empty tomb by the women who had come to anoint Jesus’ body. This passage is as follows:
“5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.
6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him.
7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’”
This passage is significant because it confirms the reality of Jesus’ resurrection, which is the cornerstone of the Christian faith. The young man in the white robe, who is believed to be an angel, tells the women that Jesus has risen from the dead and that they should go and tell his disciples. He also reminds them of Jesus’ earlier promise to meet them in Galilee.
This passage is a powerful reminder of the hope and joy that the resurrection brings, and it encourages us to share the good news with others. It also reminds us that Jesus is faithful to his promises, and that we can trust in him to guide and lead us.
As we reflect on this passage, may we be reminded of the reality of Jesus’ resurrection, and may we be encouraged to share the good news with others. May we also be filled with hope and joy, knowing that Jesus is faithful to his promises and that he is with us always.
