By: Denise N. Fyffe
In times of adversity and personal turmoil, finding solace and strength can seem like an insurmountable task. However, the timeless wisdom of Psalms 3 offers us a profound message of hope and reassurance. It chronicles a journey from despair to deliverance, reminding us of the unwavering faithfulness of God.
Let us explore this psalm and discover the transformative power of trusting in God, even during our darkest moments.
Verse 1:
“Lord, how many are my foes! How many rise up against me!”
In the opening verse, the psalmist candidly expresses the overwhelming sense of being surrounded by adversaries. We, too, may find ourselves facing numerous challenges, both internal and external. It is crucial to acknowledge and confront these difficulties honestly, recognizing the weight they impose on our spirits.
Verse 2:
“Many are saying of me, ‘God will not deliver him.’”
In the midst of our struggles, we may encounter voices of doubt and skepticism, both from others and from within ourselves. These voices attempt to undermine our faith and instill a sense of hopelessness. Yet, it is precisely in these moments that we must cling to the unwavering belief in God’s faithfulness and His ability to deliver us from our trials.
Verse 3:
“But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high.”
Amidst the chaos and doubt, we turn our gaze towards the Almighty. The psalmist finds solace in the Lord, recognizing Him as a shield of protection and a source of strength. God not only provides physical protection but also uplifts our spirits, enabling us to rise above our circumstances with renewed confidence and determination.
Verse 4:
“I call out to the Lord, and he answers me from his holy mountain.”
When we call out to the Lord in our distress, He hears our cries and responds with love and compassion. Though the answers may not always come immediately or in the ways we expect, we can trust that God is attentive to our needs. His holy presence extends beyond our limited understanding, and in His perfect timing, He provides the guidance and deliverance we seek.
Verse 5:
“I lie down and sleep; I wake again because the Lord sustains me.”
In the face of adversity, the psalmist finds the ability to rest in the assurance of God’s sustaining power. Trusting in the Lord’s faithfulness, we can experience a profound peace that allows us to lie down and sleep, undisturbed by fear or anxiety. It is in this surrender and reliance on God that we find the strength to face each new day with renewed hope and confidence.
Verse 8:
“From the Lord comes deliverance. May your blessing be on your people.”
The psalm concludes with a proclamation of deliverance and a prayer for God’s blessings. We are reminded that ultimate deliverance comes from the Lord alone. In our surrender and trust, we find refuge and strength. May His blessings be upon us, sustaining and guiding us through the challenges we face.

3 But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.
4 I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah.
5 I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me.
6 I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about.
