Scripture records major dream and vision experiences involving figures such as Joseph and Daniel, while Peter and John are especially associated with significant visions. From Pharaoh’s dreams in Genesis to the visions recorded in Revelation, the Bible contains many examples of God communicating through dreams and visions. But how do we decipher their meaning? How can we understand the symbolism and imagery in our dreams and visions?

The Word
Numbers 12:6 teaches that when a prophet is among God’s people, the LORD may make Himself known in a vision and speak in a dream. This scripture records God using dreams and visions in communication with a prophet, while the wider biblical witness still calls believers to discern and test spiritual claims responsibly. Does that mean everyone who dreams is a prophet? No. Numbers 12:6 describes one way God may communicate with a prophet; it does not teach that having dreams is evidence of a prophetic office or gifting. Furthermore, Acts 2:17-18 (ESV), also states, “And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. even on my male servants and female servants in those days, I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.” Acts 2:17–18 shows the Spirit being poured out broadly, with sons and daughters prophesying, young men seeing visions, and old men dreaming dreams. The passage supports the biblical reality of dreams and visions without teaching that every dream is divine revelation or that every dreamer holds a prophetic office.Communicating with God Through Dreams and Visions
Dreams and visions are among the ways God may communicate with individuals, people, or nations, as Scripture repeatedly demonstrates. He may use them to draw us into deeper prayer, understanding, warning, instruction, or revelation. However, not every dream is a message from God, so its source and meaning should be prayerfully discerned. We often apply secular assumptions to the meaning of dreams or why we dream what we dream. For example, eating something bad, having an overactive imagination, or our brain is trying to make sense of the day’s activities. We are spiritual beings as well as physical creatures, and Scripture affirms both spiritual interaction and divine communication. God is not distant from His creation; He continues to speak and lead through His Word and the Holy Spirit and may also communicate through dreams, visions, and other biblically consistent means.
