Christian Declarations: Praying and Declaring Over Your Children
by Minister Denise N. Fyffe
As a parent, one of the greatest gifts you can give your children is the covering of prayer and declaration. The world is full of uncertainties, but as parents, we have the incredible privilege of speaking life, protection, and blessings over our sons and daughters. Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” While training and teaching are essential, prayer and declaration act as powerful spiritual tools that build a protective hedge around your children.
In today’s culture, where so many influences are vying for our children’s attention, covering them in prayer is not just an option—it’s a necessity. But even more than prayer, we can take our intercession to the next level by declaring God’s promises over their lives.
Why Make Declarations for Your Children?
The Bible is full of promises that apply to your children. When you declare God’s Word over them, you’re agreeing with heaven concerning their purpose, protection, and destiny. It’s not enough to simply hope that our children will make the right decisions, stay safe, or grow in faith. We must actively participate in shaping their spiritual future by declaring what God has already promised.
For instance, when you declare scriptures like Isaiah 54:13, “All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children,” you are speaking peace and divine guidance over your children. This kind of declaration aligns your will with God’s will for their lives.
Declaring Their Identity in Christ
One of the most important things you can declare over your children is their identity in Christ. With so many voices trying to define who they are, it’s essential to speak God’s truth about their value, worth, and purpose. Remind them that they are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14) and that they are children of God, set apart for His purpose (1 Peter 2:9).
When you declare these truths regularly, you’re reinforcing their identity in Christ, helping them withstand the negative messages they may encounter from the world around them. Your words have the power to shape their understanding of who they are in God’s eyes, laying a foundation that will keep them rooted in faith.
Declaring Protection and Wisdom
In a world that can sometimes feel chaotic, declaring God’s protection and wisdom over your children is critical. Pray scriptures such as Psalm 91:11, which says, “For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” Speak protection over them as they go to school, make decisions, and navigate their relationships.
You can also declare wisdom over your children, asking that they have the discernment to make godly choices.
James 1:5 tells us,
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”
Your declarations of wisdom will equip your children to make decisions that honor God and align with His will for their lives.
Daily Declarations to Cover Your Children
Making daily declarations over your children doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with a few key scriptures that speak to your heart, and speak them aloud over your children each day. Whether you’re declaring protection, wisdom, or blessings, your words will build a foundation that helps your children thrive spiritually, emotionally, and physically.
