How God Uses Unlikely Leaders to Accomplish Great Things: Lessons from the Judges
by Minister Denise N. Fyffe
The Book of Judges presents a fascinating and often turbulent period in Israel’s history, marked by cycles of rebellion, oppression, repentance, and deliverance. During this time, God raised up a series of judges—unlikely leaders who, despite their weaknesses and flaws, were used by God to deliver Israel from its enemies and restore the nation’s faith. Today, we explore the stories of these judges, offering insights on how God uses unlikely leaders to accomplish great things, often in the most unexpected ways.
The Cycle of Sin and Deliverance
The narrative structure of the Book of Judges is built around a recurring cycle: Israel falls into sin and idolatry, they are oppressed by foreign powers as a consequence, they cry out to God in repentance, and God raises up a judge to deliver them. This cycle repeats throughout the book, highlighting both the faithfulness of God in delivering His people and the persistent waywardness of Israel.
In Judges 2:18-19, this cycle is summarized:
“And when the Lord raised up judges for them, the Lord was with the judge and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the Lord was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who oppressed them and harassed them. And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they reverted and behaved more corruptly than their fathers, by following other gods, to serve them and bow down to them; they did not cease from their own doings nor from their stubborn way.”
This cycle underscores a central theme of Judges: despite Israel’s repeated failures, God’s mercy and willingness to deliver them never wavers. The judges He raises up are often surprising choices, demonstrating that God’s power is made perfect in weakness.
Othniel: The First Judge
The first judge, Othniel, was a man of faith who delivered Israel from the oppression of King Cushan-Rishathaim of Mesopotamia. Though little is said about Othniel, his story sets the pattern for the judges that follow.
In Judges 3:9-10, we read:
“When the children of Israel cried out to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for the children of Israel, who delivered them: Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. The Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the Lord delivered Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed over Cushan-Rishathaim.”
Othniel’s story illustrates that God’s deliverance begins with His Spirit empowering a leader. Othniel’s background as the younger brother of Caleb, a prominent figure in Israel, shows that God often prepares His leaders through their experiences and relationships, equipping them for the tasks ahead.
Ehud: The Left-Handed Deliverer
One of the most unusual stories in Judges is that of Ehud, the left-handed judge who delivered Israel from the Moabites. Ehud’s left-handedness, considered a disadvantage in ancient warfare, became the key to his success.
In Judges 3:15, we see God’s surprising choice:
“But when the children of Israel cried out to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for them: Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left-handed man. By him the children of Israel sent tribute to Eglon king of Moab.”
Ehud’s unique ability allowed him to conceal a sword and assassinate King Eglon, leading to Israel’s deliverance. His story is a powerful reminder that God often uses what the world considers weaknesses or disadvantages to accomplish His purposes. Ehud’s left-handedness, rather than being a liability, was the very trait that enabled him to fulfill God’s plan.
Deborah and Barak: The Courage to Lead
Deborah stands out as one of the most remarkable judges, not only because she was a woman in a male-dominated society, but also because of her wisdom and courage. Deborah was both a prophetess and a judge, and under her leadership, Israel experienced a significant victory over the Canaanite oppressor Sisera.
In Judges 4:4-5, Deborah’s role is introduced:
“Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, was judging Israel at that time. And she would sit under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the mountains of Ephraim. And the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.”
When Barak, the military leader, hesitated to go into battle without Deborah’s presence, she agreed to accompany him, but she warned that the honor of victory would go to a woman. This prophecy was fulfilled when Jael, another woman, killed Sisera, bringing deliverance to Israel.
Deborah’s story teaches us that leadership is not limited by gender or societal expectations. God equips and empowers those He calls, regardless of their background, to accomplish His purposes. Her courage and wisdom are an example of how God can use unlikely leaders to inspire and guide others to victory.
Gideon: From Fear to Faith
Gideon’s story is a powerful testament to how God can transform fear into faith. When God called Gideon to deliver Israel from the Midianites, Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress, hiding from the enemy. His initial reaction was one of doubt and insecurity.
In Judges 6:15, Gideon responds to God’s call:
“So he said to Him, ‘O my Lord, how can I save Israel? Indeed my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.’”
Despite Gideon’s doubts, God reassured him that He would be with him. Gideon’s victory over the Midianites with just 300 men, armed with trumpets and torches, is one of the most extraordinary stories in the Bible. This victory was not achieved through military might but through God’s power, showing that God often works through our weaknesses to demonstrate His strength.
Gideon’s journey from fear to faith encourages us to trust in God’s calling, even when we feel inadequate. His story reminds us that God’s presence and power are what truly matter, not our perceived strengths or weaknesses.
Jephthah: A Leader from Humble Beginnings
Jephthah’s story is one of redemption and tragedy. Born to a prostitute and rejected by his family, Jephthah became an outcast. Yet, when Israel was in need, they turned to Jephthah to lead them against the Ammonites.
In Judges 11:1-2, his background is described:
“Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, but he was the son of a harlot; and Gilead begot Jephthah. Gilead’s wife bore sons; and when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out, and said to him, ‘You shall have no inheritance in our father’s house, for you are the son of another woman.’”
Jephthah’s leadership was marked by his negotiation skills and military prowess, but it was also marred by a tragic vow that led to the loss of his daughter. His story highlights both the potential and the pitfalls of leadership. Despite his humble beginnings and flawed decisions, God used Jephthah to deliver Israel, demonstrating that God’s purposes can be accomplished even through imperfect leaders.
Samson: Strength and Weakness
Samson is perhaps the most famous judge, known for his incredible physical strength and his weaknesses in character. Samson’s life was marked by great victories against the Philistines, but also by personal failures that led to his downfall.
In Judges 13:24-25, Samson’s unique calling is introduced:
“So the woman bore a son and called his name Samson; and the child grew, and the Lord blessed him. And the Spirit of the Lord began to move upon him at Mahaneh Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol.”
Samson’s strength was a gift from God, intended to deliver Israel from the Philistines. However, his impulsiveness and disregard for his Nazirite vow ultimately led to his capture and humiliation. Yet, in his final moments, Samson’s faith was restored, and he prayed for strength one last time, bringing down the temple of Dagon and defeating more Philistines in his death than in his life.
Samson’s story is a reminder of the complexity of God’s leaders. Despite his flaws, God used Samson to fulfill His purposes. His life teaches us that while our weaknesses can lead to failure, God’s grace is sufficient to accomplish His will through us, even in our brokenness.
Lessons from the Book of Judges
The Book of Judges offers profound lessons on how God uses unlikely leaders to accomplish great things. First, the stories of these judges show that God’s calling is not limited by human qualifications. Whether it’s Othniel’s family background, Ehud’s left-handedness, Deborah’s gender, Gideon’s fear, Jephthah’s humble beginnings, or Samson’s flawed character, God uses people from all walks of life to achieve His purposes.
Second, these stories highlight the importance of faith and reliance on God’s power. The judges were not victorious because of their own abilities, but because God was with them. Their successes demonstrate that when we trust in God and act in obedience to His calling, He can work through us in ways that surpass our expectations.
Finally, the Book of Judges reminds us of the cyclical nature of human sin and God’s relentless mercy. Despite Israel’s repeated failures, God continued to raise up leaders to deliver them. This cycle underscores the importance of repentance and the hope that God’s grace offers us the opportunity to start anew.
Conclusion
The Book of Judges is a powerful testament to how God uses unlikely leaders to accomplish His purposes. Through the stories of Othniel, Ehud, Deborah, Gideon, Jephthah, and Samson, we see that God’s power is made perfect in weakness. As we reflect on these stories, may we be encouraged to trust in God’s calling, knowing that He can use each of us—despite our flaws and limitations—to do great things for His glory.
