Sunday Sermon: Trusting God in the Midst of Life’s Unexpected Trials

by Minister Denise N. Fyffe

A few years ago, I faced a week that was one of those weeks where I simply did not want to step outside my house. So many troubling events unfolded that I found myself seeking refuge in the shadow of the Almighty. It felt as though the enemy was using people, circumstances at work, and even my daily travels to shake my faith—trying to put me in situations that could take my life, cause me to lose my job, or rob me of my peace of mind.

Navigating Life’s Sudden Challenges

That Wednesday, I lost count of how many times I had to slam on my brakes. One incident stands out vividly. A government bus driver decided to stop abruptly right in the middle of the highway, forcing me to react quickly to avoid a collision. Earlier that same morning, I narrowly escaped a potentially disastrous situation.

On my way to work, I chose to deviate from my usual route—a decision I now realize was influenced by a voice I shouldn’t have heeded.

Up the road, a trailer had broken down, obstructing the path. I had two choices: drive into the middle of the road to turn around or pass behind it. I chose the latter. As I attempted to maneuver around the trailer, my car dipped into what felt like a pothole. The hard, jarring impact when the front end hit the road shaved years off my life. In that split second, fear gripped me.

God’s Providential Protection

But God was with me. I didn’t press the brake; instead, I allowed the momentum of the car to carry it out of the hole. The car bounced, and the back wheels shifted away from the perilous path the front wheels had taken. This movement, I believe, kept me from being stuck—or worse—in a deep rain drainage where unscrupulous metal thieves had removed the protective grill.

Afterward, I checked my tires and found no damage. Though shaken, I drove off, thanking God for His protection. I was initially upset with myself for heeding that voice to change my route. But even in my misstep, God’s hand was upon me.

Scriptural Assurance

I am reminded of the words in Ezra 8:21 (KJV):

“Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance.”

And in Judges 18:6 (KJV):

“And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before the LORD is your way wherein ye go.”

These scriptures reaffirm that when we seek God’s guidance and protection, He is faithful to watch over us on our journey.

Finding Refuge in God

This week taught me the importance of dwelling in God’s presence, especially when the enemy tries to unsettle us.

Psalm 91:1-2 (KJV) says,

“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”

Despite the attempts of the adversary to derail us, we must remember that God’s protection is our shield. Even when we make choices that lead us into challenging situations, His grace is sufficient to see us through.

Conclusion

I share this testimony not to highlight the week’s troubles but to glorify God, who preserves us in the midst of them. Let us be vigilant in seeking His guidance in every decision, big or small. Trust in Him wholeheartedly, for Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV) encourages us: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

I urge each of you to make God your hiding place. When life’s pressures mount and the road seem uncertain, seek Him earnestly. Allow Him to direct your steps and protect you from unseen dangers.

Prayer:

Let us pray.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your unwavering protection and mercy. Thank You for guiding us even when we stray from the path You have set. We ask that You continue to watch over us, our families, and all that concerns us. Help us to trust in You completely and to seek Your face in all things. In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May He make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. May He lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. Go forth this week, confident in the knowledge that God is with you, guiding and protecting you every step of the way, amen.

I hope you find today’s sermon helpful and applicable to your life. I pray that the Word of God works effectively in your life.

Be encouraged and stay blessed.
