How to Listen and Lead with Integrity: Lessons from Samuel

by Minister Denise N. Fyffe

Samuel is one of the most significant figures in the Old Testament, serving as a prophet, priest, and the last judge of Israel. His life marks a pivotal transition in Israel’s history—from the period of the judges to the establishment of the monarchy. Samuel’s deep connection with God, his role in anointing Israel’s first two kings, and his unwavering commitment to God’s will offer timeless lessons on how to listen to God’s voice and lead with integrity.

Samuel’s Call: Listening to God’s Voice

Samuel’s story begins with his miraculous birth in response to his mother Hannah’s prayers. Dedicated to the Lord from birth, Samuel was raised in the house of the Lord under Eli the priest. His first direct encounter with God came as a young boy when God called him during the night. 1 Samuel 3:10 captures this pivotal moment:

“Now the Lord came and stood and called as at other times, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ And Samuel answered, ‘Speak, for Your servant hears.’”

This moment is significant because it highlights Samuel’s readiness and willingness to listen to God’s voice. Despite his youth, Samuel responded with humility and openness, setting the tone for his entire ministry.

Samuel’s call teaches us the importance of being attentive and responsive to God’s voice. Listening to God requires a heart that is open and willing to obey, even when the message is challenging or unexpected. Samuel’s example encourages us to cultivate a habit of listening to God through prayer, meditation on His Word, and a sensitive spirit.

Samuel’s Role as Judge and Prophet: Leading with Integrity

As Samuel grew, he became known throughout Israel as a prophet of the Lord, and his leadership was marked by integrity and faithfulness to God’s commands. Unlike the corrupt sons of Eli, Samuel led the people with justice and righteousness. 1 Samuel 7:15-17 describes his role:

“And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life. He went from year to year on a circuit to Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah, and judged Israel in all those places. But he always returned to Ramah, for his home was there. There he judged Israel, and there he built an altar to the Lord.”

Samuel’s consistent leadership over many years demonstrates the importance of integrity in leadership. He was not swayed by the temptations of power or wealth but remained committed to serving God and His people.

Samuel’s life teaches us that true leadership is rooted in integrity and a commitment to God’s principles. As leaders, whether in our families, workplaces, or communities, we are called to lead with honesty, fairness, and a deep sense of responsibility to God and those we serve.

Anointing the Kings: Obedience to God’s Will

Samuel’s role as a prophet also involved anointing Israel’s first two kings—Saul and David. Each anointing carried significant implications for the nation of Israel and demonstrated Samuel’s obedience to God’s will, even when it was difficult.

When the people demanded a king, Samuel was initially displeased, recognizing that their request was a rejection of God’s kingship. However, God instructed Samuel to heed their request and anoint Saul. 1 Samuel 8:7 records God’s response to Samuel:

“And the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them.’”

Later, when Saul disobeyed God, Samuel was tasked with anointing David, a young shepherd, as the next king of Israel. Samuel’s obedience in these matters, despite his personal feelings, shows his commitment to following God’s direction above all else.

Samuel’s actions teach us the importance of obedience to God’s will, even when it conflicts with our desires or the expectations of others. True obedience requires us to trust in God’s plan and to carry out His instructions faithfully, knowing that His ways are higher than our own.

Samuel’s Legacy: Faithfulness to the End

Samuel’s life and ministry were marked by unwavering faithfulness to God, from his childhood until his death. His influence extended beyond his lifetime, as he laid the spiritual foundation for the kingdom of Israel. 1 Samuel 12:23-24 captures Samuel’s commitment to the people:

“Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you; but I will teach you the good and the right way. Only fear the Lord, and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you.”

Even in his farewell address, Samuel remained focused on guiding the people toward faithfulness to God. His legacy is one of deep devotion, integrity, and a lifelong commitment to God’s service.

Samuel’s legacy teaches us the value of a life lived in faithful service to God. His example encourages us to remain steadfast in our commitments, to lead with integrity, and to continually seek God’s will throughout our lives.
