Sunday Sermon: Stand and Embrace God’s Strength When Battle Weary

My walk with God today is vastly different from what it was 10 years ago, 20 years ago or even 30 years ago. I got saved in primary school and as a teenager, I was filled with youthful zeal, optimism, and an eagerness to serve Him in any way I could. But as the years have passed, I’ve had my share of battles, and now I must consider myself battle weary. Yet even though I have fought the good fight, I am still on duty.

There are days when the idea of warring against hell and its minions feels overwhelming. But when I remember the comforting words from Yolanda Adams’ song, “The battle is not yours, it’s the Lord’s,” I am encouraged to press on. 2 Chronicles 20:15 (KJV) tells us, “Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s.” This reminder strengthens me to keep moving forward, even when I feel too weak to continue.

Detours and Disappointments

The road I’ve walked hasn’t been smooth. There were many detours along the way—detours caused by those who were supposed to guide and help me. They turned their backs and became distracted themselves. For years, I stopped going to the “dining hall”—the church. I no longer feasted on the Word with the same fervor. I was discouraged, angry, bitter, depressed, impatient, and to be honest, unforgiving.

But even when I felt that I had wandered far from God, He never left me. He was patient with me, enduring my pain, and never forsaking me. Deuteronomy 31:6 (KJV) reminds us, “Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” Even when I had forsaken Him, He remained a Father, a friend, a counselor, and my protector. He never deserts those who fall by the wayside unless we utterly reject Him and give up on our Christian Life.

The Process of Healing and Growth

Over the years, God worked on my heart. He softened the anger, soothed the bitterness, and dealt with the hurt that had kept me from Him. He was breaking my spirit—not in a way that crushed me, but in a way that brought me back to Him. When my only choice was to turn to Him and embrace His healing presence, that’s when I began to grow again. Jeremiah 18:4 (KJV) says, “And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.”

One of the hardest lessons I had to learn was that people—yes, even Christians—are human first. They make mistakes, they fall, they disappoint, and they hurt others, just like anyone else. But God taught me to forgive them, to understand that they too are struggling with their own battles, just like I was. Donnie McClurkin says it perfectly in his song: “We fall down, but we get up.” No matter how many times we stumble, we must keep getting back up in our Christian Life.

Strength Through Christ

Now, even as I continue battling—for my life, my mind, my spirit, and my very soul—I am stronger. I am sure of my footing. I try my best to stay on the straight and narrow, though it’s not always easy. Matthew 7:14 (KJV) reminds us, “Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” Every day, I am quicker to forgive, quicker to understand, and quicker to open my heart to God for healing and guidance.

I have come to identify my weaknesses more readily, to humble myself before the Lord, and to seek His strength. I have learned that without God, I cannot survive. 1 Peter 5:8 (KJV) warns us, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” We are constantly being hunted by the enemy, and the only way to survive is by clinging to the protection of God.

The Importance of Fellowship and Spiritual Nourishment

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned in this season of my life is that church is vital for fellowship and spiritual nourishment. It’s easy to grow discouraged when you lose heart in a particular church or ministry, but God will always move you into the right place at the right time. He will guide you to the “feast hall” that will nourish your spirit and help you grow.

If you’re struggling with disappointment or hurt in your church, seek God first and ask Him to guide you through the changes. Matthew 6:33 (KJV) says, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” When we seek God’s wisdom and trust Him to lead us, He will take us to the place where we can thrive.

Conclusion

My walk with God has changed, matured, and deepened over the years. There have been detours, battles, and moments of despair, but through it all, God has never left me. He is faithful, and He has taught me that even when people fail us, God never does. He works in our hearts, softening and healing the broken places, and He helps us grow into stronger, wiser, and more humble servants.

If you’re battle-weary today, take heart. You are not alone. God is with you, walking beside you every step of the way. Remember that the battle is not yours, it’s the Lord’s. He will fight for you, sustain you, and guide you through every trial. And if you have fallen, get back up. God is waiting with open arms, ready to lead you back into His grace and strength.

If you’ve found yourself weary from the battles of life, turn to God. Ask Him to renew your strength and heal your heart. Remember, the battle belongs to Him, and He will never leave you or forsake you. Keep pressing on, keep getting back up, and keep your eyes fixed on His Kingdom.

Closing Prayer

Let us pray.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your faithfulness and love. Even when we are battle-weary and discouraged, You never leave us. Lord, help us to lean on You for strength and guidance in every situation. Soften our hearts to forgive those who have hurt us and help us to rise each time we fall. Lord, may we always seek Your kingdom and Your righteousness, trusting that You will provide for our every need. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May He strengthen you for the battles you face, and may He guide you on the path of righteousness. Walk in His peace and assurance, knowing that He is always with you, fighting for you and leading you into victory. Amen.
