How to Seek and Receive God’s Blessings: Lessons from Elisha

by Minister Denise N. Fyffe

Elisha, the prophet who succeeded Elijah, is often remembered for the double portion of Elijah’s spirit that he received from God. His life and ministry are marked by extraordinary miracles and profound acts of compassion. Elisha’s story offers valuable insights into how we can seek and receive God’s blessings in our lives.

Today we explore key moments from Elisha’s life and the lessons they provide for those who desire to experience God’s abundant blessings.

Elisha’s Background

Elisha was called to ministry while he was plowing a field, a seemingly ordinary task that would lead to an extraordinary life. When Elijah cast his mantle on Elisha, it signified the transfer of prophetic authority and the beginning of Elisha’s journey as a servant of God. Elisha’s response was immediate and wholehearted—he left everything behind to follow Elijah, demonstrating his willingness to pursue God’s call at any cost (1 Kings 19:19-21). This initial act of obedience set the stage for the great blessings Elisha would later receive.

The Double Portion: A Request for Greater Anointing

One of the most significant events in Elisha’s life is his request for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit. This request is recorded in 2 Kings 2:9, where Elisha, knowing that Elijah’s time on earth was coming to an end, boldly asked:

“Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.”

Elijah responded that this was a difficult request but that it would be granted if Elisha witnessed his departure. When Elijah was taken up into heaven by a whirlwind, Elisha saw it and received the double portion he had asked for. This moment teaches us the importance of boldly asking God for His blessings, even when the request seems difficult or beyond our reach.

Elisha’s desire for a greater anointing was not rooted in selfish ambition but in a genuine longing to serve God more effectively. His example encourages us to seek God’s blessings with a pure heart, confident that He is willing to equip us for the work He has called us to do.

Miracles of Provision: Trusting in God’s Abundance

Elisha’s ministry was characterized by numerous miracles, many of which involved God’s provision in times of need. One of the most well-known miracles is the multiplication of the widow’s oil in 2 Kings 4:1-7. A widow, deeply in debt and at risk of losing her sons to slavery, came to Elisha for help. Elisha instructed her to borrow as many empty vessels as she could from her neighbors and then to pour the little oil she had left into them.

As she obeyed, the oil miraculously multiplied, filling every vessel until there were no more left. This miracle illustrates that God’s blessings often come through our obedience and faith. When we trust God with the little we have, He can multiply it beyond our expectations.

Another significant miracle was the feeding of a hundred men with just twenty loaves of barley and some grain (2 Kings 4:42-44). Despite the seemingly insufficient amount of food, Elisha trusted in God’s provision and instructed his servant to distribute the food. Not only was everyone fed, but there were also leftovers. This event highlights the principle that God’s blessings are not limited by our circumstances. Even when resources seem scarce, God is able to provide abundantly, meeting our needs and often exceeding them.

Healing and Restoration: God’s Blessings of Compassion

Elisha’s ministry also included many acts of healing and restoration, demonstrating God’s compassion for His people. One of the most remarkable stories is the healing of Naaman, a commander of the Syrian army, who was afflicted with leprosy.

Naaman came to Elisha seeking healing, and Elisha instructed him to wash in the Jordan River seven times (2 Kings 5:10-14). Though initially reluctant, Naaman obeyed and was miraculously healed. This story shows that God’s blessings often require us to act in faith, even when His instructions challenge our expectations or pride.

Elisha’s compassion is further evident in the resurrection of the Shunammite woman’s son (2 Kings 4:32-37). This woman had shown great hospitality to Elisha, and when her son died suddenly, she turned to the prophet in her grief. Elisha’s prayerful persistence resulted in the child’s miraculous return to life. This event underscores the power of intercessory prayer and the importance of compassion in ministry. Elisha’s life teaches us that seeking and receiving God’s blessings often involves being a channel of His blessings to others, especially in times of need.

Lessons from Elisha’s Life

Elisha’s life offers several key lessons on how to seek and receive God’s blessings. First, his request for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit teaches us the importance of boldness in prayer. We should not be afraid to ask God for great things, especially when our motives are aligned with His will. Second, Elisha’s miracles of provision remind us that God’s blessings are often linked to our obedience and faith. When we trust God with what we have, no matter how small, He is able to multiply it for His glory.

Furthermore, Elisha’s ministry of healing and restoration highlights the role of compassion in seeking God’s blessings. As we seek God’s blessings in our own lives, we should also be mindful of how we can be a blessing to others, using the gifts and resources God has given us to bring healing and restoration to those in need.

Conclusion

Elisha’s life is a powerful example of how to seek and receive God’s blessings. His boldness in asking for a double portion, his trust in God’s provision, and his compassionate ministry all serve as a guide for us today. As we pursue God’s blessings in our own lives, may we do so with a heart that seeks to serve Him and bless others, confident that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think (Ephesians 3:20).
