Sunday Sermon: Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God
by Minister Denise N. Fyffe
Jesus’ words to His disciples over two thousand years ago still resonate deeply with us today: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33 KJV). This isn’t just a comforting verse; it’s a command that calls us to shift our focus from the temporary, material things of this world to the eternal things of God’s kingdom.
Right now, I find myself in a place where material things hold little value to me. My focus is on what truly matters—doing God’s will and seeking His kingdom. When you’ve walked through the fires of loss, disappointment, and betrayal like I have, and have seen how God faithfully provides, your perspective shifts. You begin to see the world and your circumstances through the lens of God’s purpose, rather than the lens of worldly concerns.
The Shift in Perspective
I didn’t always feel this way. There was a time when I, like many others, valued my possessions and placed my security in my job, my money, and the things I owned. But through my own Job-like experience, God has stripped away my reliance on these temporary things. People stole my belongings and money—things I had worked hard for—and yet, God allowed it for a greater purpose.
Job 1:21 (KJV) reminds us of Job’s declaration: “The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” Job understood something that I’ve come to realize through my own journey: everything we have comes from God. And when God allows things to be taken away, it is not to harm us, but to draw us closer to Him.
I’ve experienced having nothing, yet God met every single one of my needs. My debts, which I couldn’t pay off even while I was working, were suddenly taken care of. I traveled across several states in the U.S. with little to no money after my company shut down, but God used people—complete strangers, even—to bless me and provide for me. Through it all, He was teaching me to rely on Him alone.
When you experience God’s provision in such tangible ways, how can you doubt Him? Philippians 4:19 (KJV) tells us, “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” I am a living testimony that God’s promises are true. He provides for His children, not just materially but in every way that we need.
Seeking First the Kingdom of God
This is why seeking God’s kingdom has become my sole desire. I don’t care much for material things anymore, except as they meet my immediate needs. The experiences I’ve gone through have stripped away my desire for worldly possessions, and instead, I long to see God’s will done in my life and in the world around me.
Trust God’s Provision Through the Storm
And I know that many of you reading this are going through your own Job experiences. The economic downturn, personal losses, financial struggles—these things weigh heavily on your heart. But let me tell you this: God is still faithful. Just as He provided for me, He will provide for you. Psalm 37:25 (KJV) says, “I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.” God will take care of His children.
The Kingdom of God is at hand, and now is the time for us to focus our attention on what matters most—seeking His kingdom and doing His will. God is preparing His people, His servants, and His children for a great harvest. This is a season of calling. Isaiah 55:6 (KJV) reminds us, “Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near.”
A Time of Harvest
This is a time for harvesting souls. We, as God’s children, are called to minister to the unsaved, to reach out to the backsliders and prodigals, and to encourage those already in the Kingdom of God. We are called to be workers in His vineyard—bringing in those who are lost, strengthening those who are weak, and supporting those who are struggling in their faith.
If this sounds like a paradox to you, let me explain: God will never leave His workers without nourishment, without the tools and resources they need to complete the task He has set before them. Matthew 6:33 promises that when we seek His kingdom first, everything else will be provided. God will feed, support, and care for those in His house while they work to bring others into His fold.
This is not the time to be distracted by the cares of this world. Now is the time to focus fully on God’s Kingdom. Now is the time to take up our spiritual responsibilities and do the work that God has called us to do. The harvest is ready, and God is calling His laborers to the field. Matthew 9:37 (KJV) says, “The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few.”
If you are feeling the weight of this season, take heart. God is with you. Just as He has provided for me, He will provide for you. But first, you must seek His kingdom. You must put God first in your life, above everything else, and trust that He will meet your every need. Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV) encourages us, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Conclusion
I stand here as a testimony to God’s faithfulness. He has provided for me in the most impossible situations, and He will do the same for you. But we must follow His command: Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and everything else will fall into place. God takes care of His own, and He will never leave us or forsake us.
I encourage you today—whatever you are facing, whatever trials are in front of you—seek God first. Put Him at the center of your life and trust Him to provide for your every need. Don’t be consumed by the temporary struggles of this world. Focus on the eternal reward that awaits those who remain faithful to God’s calling. Seek His kingdom, and you will never lack.
Closing Prayer
Let us pray.
Heavenly Father, we come before You today with hearts seeking after Your kingdom. Lord, help us to focus on You and not the distractions of this world. We thank You for Your provision, for Your faithfulness, and for Your love that never fails. Teach us to trust in You more, to seek Your will above our own, and to rely on Your promises. As we go out into the harvest, give us strength and courage to do Your work. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Blessing
May the Lord bless you as you seek His kingdom. May He provide for your every need and guide you in His righteousness. Trust in Him, and know that He is always with you, even in the toughest of times. Go in peace, knowing that God has already secured your victory. Amen.
