How to Fulfill Your Purpose in God’s Timing: Lessons from Esther

The story of Esther is one of Scripture’s strongest examples of providence, courage and timing. Esther, a young Jewish woman who became queen of Persia, was positioned in a place of influence before she knew the full reason she would be there. When her people later faced destruction, the position that once looked like personal promotion became a place of responsibility.
Positioned Before the Crisis
Esther, also called Hadassah, was an orphan raised by Mordecai. Through a series of events she became queen after Vashti was removed from that position.
“The king loved Esther more than all the other women, and she obtained grace and favor in his sight more than all the virgins; so he set the royal crown upon her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.” — Esther 2:17 (NKJV)
Esther’s position did not immediately reveal her assignment. This is an important lesson for believers. Sometimes God places us in a job, community, relationship, ministry, school or other environment before we understand what obedience will later require there.
The Moment of Decision
When Haman’s plot threatened the Jewish people, Mordecai challenged Esther to recognize the possibility that her position had purpose beyond comfort.
“Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” — Esther 4:14 (NKJV)
Esther could not remain neutral. Approaching the king without being summoned carried real danger, but silence also had consequences. Purpose often becomes visible when a situation demands a faithful decision.
Fasting Before Action
Esther did not rush into the king’s presence. She asked Mordecai to gather the Jews in Shushan and fast for her. She and her attendants would do the same.
“Go, gather all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me; neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will fast likewise. And so I will go to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish!” — Esther 4:16 (NKJV)
The fast did not replace action. It prepared Esther to act with courage. This is a crucial principle for Christian fasting: we seek God deeply, and then we obey what the situation requires.
Wisdom, Timing and Restraint
Esther did not disclose everything immediately. She approached the king carefully, prepared banquets and waited for the right moment to expose Haman’s plot. Courage did not mean impulsiveness. Faith and wisdom worked together.
There are times when believers know the right goal but still need God’s timing for the conversation, decision or next step. Prayer and fasting can help us slow down enough to distinguish urgency from panic.
The Reversal
Haman was exposed, Mordecai was elevated and a new decree allowed the Jewish people to defend themselves. Esther’s obedience became part of a larger deliverance she could not have accomplished by herself.
The story does not teach that every fast guarantees the outcome we want. It teaches us that God can position ordinary people, use courageous obedience and work through circumstances far beyond our individual control.
Recognize Position as Stewardship
Ask not only what a position gives you, but what faithful responsibility it may carry.
Fast Before Major Action
Use fasting to seek God with concentration before serious decisions—not to avoid making them.
Use Courage With Wisdom
Esther was brave, but she was also strategic about timing and communication.
Accept That Purpose Can Cost Something
Obedience may require risk, discomfort, sacrifice or standing when silence would be easier.
Conclusion
Esther teaches us to trust God’s timing, recognize the responsibility connected to our position, seek Him seriously in moments of crisis and move with courage when the time for action comes. “For such a time as this” is not merely an inspirational phrase. It is a reminder that purpose may demand something from us.
