Sunday Sermon: Give the Gift of Love

by Minister Denise N. Fyffe

Sometime ago, I wrote about waking up with a song in your heart, ready to tackle the day for whatever Jesus would have you do. And this morning, it happened again. As I woke up, an old song filled my spirit, one I haven’t heard in years:

“And the gift goes on, the Father gave the Son,
And the gift goes on, the Son gave the Spirit,
And the gift goes on, the Spirit gave us life,
So we could give the gift of Love.”

This phrase kept repeating in my heart. Isn’t God amazing? Somehow, a song I haven’t heard in ages resurfaced in my spirit, pulling from the depths of my memory. God was sending me a message, reminding me of the power of His love and how we are called to pass that love on to others. Through the simplicity of a song, He reminded me that His love is a gift meant to be shared, and today, I’m passing that message on to you.

The Gift of Love

The song speaks of God’s gift of love that continues to flow through the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Each part of the Godhead has played a vital role in giving us life and equipping us to give the same gift of love to others.

  • The Father gave the Son: This is the ultimate expression of love. John 3:16 (KJV) says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” God’s love is so deep, so unconditional, that He was willing to give up His most precious gift—His Son—so that we could have life.
  • The Son gave the Spirit: After Jesus completed His work on earth, He ascended to heaven, but He did not leave us alone. John 14:16 (KJV) tells us, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.” Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to be our Comforter, our Guide, and our Helper. The Spirit lives in us, teaching us how to live and love in a way that reflects Christ.
  • The Spirit gave us life: Through the Holy Spirit, we are given new life, and that life enables us to share the gift of love with the world. Romans 5:5 (KJV) says, “The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” The Spirit fills us with God’s love so that we can be vessels of His love to others.

The message of this song reminds me that the gift of love keeps going. It didn’t stop with the Father, the Son, or the Holy Spirit. That gift has been entrusted to us, and now, it’s our turn to pass it on.

Giving the Gift of Love

Today, I encourage you to give the gift of love. Sometimes, the most profound witness we can offer to the world isn’t through preaching or grand gestures, but through the simple acts of kindness that reflect Christ’s love.

  • Smile at someone. You never know how much a genuine smile can brighten someone’s day. Proverbs 15:30 (KJV) says, “The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart.”
  • Ask how someone is doing. Take time to genuinely check on people. A simple, sincere “How are you?” can mean the world to someone who feels unseen or unheard.
  • Say a kind word. Proverbs 16:24 (KJV) tells us, “Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.” Words have power. Speak life and encouragement into the lives of those around you.
  • Do a kind deed. Sometimes, it’s the small things that make the biggest impact. Offer to help someone, show patience, give someone a hand, or extend a random act of kindness. 1 John 3:18 (KJV) reminds us, “My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but indeed and in truth.”

These small acts are tangible expressions of God’s love. They reflect the love that Christ has poured into our hearts through His Spirit. When we live out love in this way, we are witnessing for Jesus Christ. We are showing the world what it means to be His followers, not just through our words, but through our actions.

The Power of Music as a Messenger

God has a way of communicating with us through music. Music is a powerful medium that touches the heart and soul. Just like the song He brought to my heart this morning, God often uses music to remind us of His promises, to encourage us, and to bring peace in difficult times.

Colossians 3:16 (KJV) says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Music is a tool that God uses to speak to our spirits, to uplift us, and to call us to action. One day, God called me to give the gift of love through the words of that song, and now I pass that message on to you.

Conclusion

Let’s not forget that the gift of love is the greatest gift we can give. 1 John 4:19 (KJV) says, “We love him, because he first loved us.” God’s love for us is the source of all love, and when we receive that love, it’s our responsibility to pass it on. Today, ask God to show you how you can give the gift of love to someone else. Let your actions reflect the love of Christ, and in doing so, you will be a witness to His goodness and grace.

Today, make a conscious effort to give the gift of love. Smile, speak kind words, ask someone how they are doing, and show kindness in your actions. Remember, you are the hands and feet of Jesus, and through you, His love can reach the world.

Closing Prayer

Let us pray.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of love that You have given us through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to reflect that love in our daily lives, to show kindness and compassion to those around us, and to be a light in this world. Lord, guide us in how we can give the gift of love today, and let our actions be a witness of Your grace and mercy. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Blessing

May the Lord bless you with His love, fill your heart with His peace, and guide you as you share His love with others. May your life reflect His grace, and may you always walk in His love. Amen.

I hope you find today’s sermon helpful and applicable to your life. I pray that the Word of God works effectively in your life.
