Sunday Sermon: Finding Refuge in God Amidst Workplace Trials

by Minister Denise N. Fyffe

We have all experienced hardship in the workplace at one time or another. Whether it’s dealing with difficult coworkers, unfair bosses, or workplace discrimination, we have all had our moments of frustration and suffering on the job. I am no different. Over the years, I’ve faced my share of these miserable and trying circumstances, and I want to share one such story with you today, a story about betrayal, but also about God’s faithfulness in the midst of adversity.

Disrespect and Workplace Bullying

Several years ago, I worked at a popular university in Kingston, Jamaica. There, I encountered a particularly difficult coworker who had decided that disrespecting me in front of the entire office was an acceptable way to handle a disagreement over the software system I managed. Now, if you know anything about me, you’d know that I do not stand for disrespect or bullying. This was a conviction I’ve held since childhood. When I was in basic school, I experienced racism at the hands of twin sisters in my class, and I made a decision then and there that I would never allow anyone to treat me in such a way again.

That morning, I had enough of this coworker’s attitude. She had spoken disrespectfully not just to me, but to others in the office, including our boss. And I had reported her behavior to my manager previously, but nothing had changed. That day, I decided I wasn’t going to tolerate it anymore, and I let her know exactly how I felt about her disrespect. Let’s just say, things didn’t go well, but I was determined to stand up for myself and not allow anyone to subject me to workplace bullying.

The Scheme Unfolds

Two days later, after taking a scheduled day off, I returned to work only to find that the devil had been busy. In my absence, it seemed this coworker had concocted a plan to cause me to lose my job. She withheld crucial information that I needed to schedule an important exam for students who had already experienced issues with one of their online courses. That morning, my manager called me and interrogated me, asking the same questions over and over again, almost as if she was trying to catch me in a lie.

It was clear from the tone and direction of her questions that my manager believed I was at fault. She didn’t have to come out and say it, but the way she asked her questions made her stance very clear. I was not just disappointed; I was livid. Feeling the pressure mount and fearing I might say or do something I would regret, I went to my car, seeking solace and clarity. And in that moment, I did the only thing I knew would help—I prayed.

Turning to God in Moments of Despair

I’ve been a Christian since primary school, and I’ve faced more trials and tribulations than I care to count. I’ve suffered betrayals, endured spiritual attacks, and faced the hardship of poverty and job loss. I’ve battled depression and even had moments where I questioned the value of my own life. But through it all, the one thing that has kept me grounded is the love and protection of Jesus Christ. If not for my relationship with God, I would have been lost long ago.

Psalm 23 (KJV) has been my life’s anchor. It reminds me of God’s provision, His protection, and His presence in every situation. “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.” No matter the situation I face, I know God is there leading me, restoring me, and protecting me.

Faith Beyond Church Attendance

My relationship with God transcends church attendance. There was a time when I didn’t attend church for over five years. During that time, many might have thought my spiritual life would dwindle, but that wasn’t the case. God was still with me. Even though I wasn’t attending services, I continued to turn to God in prayer, thank Him for His provision, and seek His guidance in everything I did. Psalm 37:23 (KJV) says, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.” My steps were still being ordered by God, even in those years when I wasn’t sitting in a pew.

During that season, God continued to bless and protect me. I still operated in my gifts, and He still communicated with me. It was during this time that I managed to read through the entire New Testament and found myself praying and testifying more than ever before. This personal relationship with God prepared me for the trials I face at work today. While those challenges are not any easier to bear, I know where to run for refuge—under the shadow of the Almighty.

Psalm 91 – My Refuge and Fortress

When the weight of the world feels too heavy, I find comfort in Psalm 91. “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.” No matter how intense the battle gets, I know that God is my fortress. He is my safe place, my refuge in times of trouble. The attacks of the enemy may come, but they cannot touch the shelter that God has provided for me.

Conclusion

We’ve all faced trials in the workplace, but no matter what comes against us, God is always our refuge. The enemy may try to tear us down, but God is there to lift us up. Isaiah 54:17 (KJV) says, “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn.” God is faithful, and He fights our battles. When we run to Him, He shelters us from the storm.

If you’re facing trials at work or in any area of your life, remember that God is your refuge and fortress. Take time to seek Him in prayer, and trust that He will vindicate you in His time. Don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself but remember that God is the one who fights for you. Trust in His protection and allow Him to guide you through every storm.

Closing Prayer

Let us pray.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for being our refuge and fortress in the midst of life’s battles. Lord, when we face trials, help us to run to You for protection and peace. Remind us that You are always with us, fighting for us and guiding us. Lord, I lift up anyone who is struggling in the workplace or in their personal lives right now. Give them the strength to stand firm in You, and the peace to know that You are working all things out for their good. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Blessing

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May He protect you from the attacks of the enemy, and may He give you peace in the midst of your trials. Trust in His goodness and know that He is always with you. Amen.
