How to Stand Firm in Faith Amidst Opposition: Lessons from Daniel and the Handwriting on the Wall

by Minister Denise N. Fyffe

The Book of Daniel is a rich tapestry of faith, prophecy, and divine intervention, illustrating the power of standing firm in faith amidst opposition. One of the most famous stories from this book is the account of the handwriting on the wall, a moment of divine judgment that changed the course of history.

Daniel, a man of unwavering faith, played a crucial role in interpreting this mysterious message and exemplifying how to stand strong in the face of powerful opposition. Today, we explore the lessons from Daniel’s life and the event of the handwriting on the wall, offering insights on how we can remain faithful to God in challenging times.

Daniel’s Background

Daniel was among the young men taken into Babylonian captivity during the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar. Despite being in a foreign land and under constant pressure to conform to Babylonian customs and religious practices, Daniel remained faithful to God. His commitment to prayer, his refusal to defile himself with the king’s food, and his boldness in interpreting dreams and visions set him apart as a man of God, even in the courts of a pagan empire.

The story of the handwriting on the wall takes place during the reign of King Belshazzar, Nebuchadnezzar’s successor. Belshazzar held a great feast, during which he and his nobles drank from the sacred vessels taken from the temple in Jerusalem. In the midst of their revelry, a mysterious hand appeared and wrote a message on the wall, terrifying the king and his guests.

The Writing on the Wall: A Divine Message

The account of the handwriting on the wall is found in Daniel 5:5-6:

“In the same hour the fingers of a man’s hand appeared and wrote opposite the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace; and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote. Then the king’s countenance changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his hips were loosened and his knees knocked against each other.”

This supernatural event left Belshazzar paralyzed with fear. None of the king’s wise men could interpret the writing, but the queen mother remembered Daniel, who had served under Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel was summoned to interpret the message, which read “MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.” The interpretation, as Daniel explained, was a pronouncement of judgment against Belshazzar and his kingdom:

“This is the interpretation of each word. MENE: God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it; TEKEL: You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting; PERES: Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.” (Daniel 5:26-28)

That very night, Belshazzar was killed, and Darius the Mede took over the kingdom. This event serves as a powerful reminder of God’s sovereignty over the affairs of nations and His ability to bring down even the mightiest of rulers when they defy Him.

Daniel’s Courage and Faithfulness

Daniel’s role in this story highlights his unwavering courage and faithfulness to God. Despite the danger of delivering such a harsh message to the king, Daniel did not waver. He spoke the truth with boldness, fully aware that his words could cost him his life. Daniel’s courage was rooted in his deep relationship with God, cultivated through a lifetime of prayer and devotion.

In Daniel 6:10, we see the strength of Daniel’s faith, even when his life was threatened by a decree forbidding prayer to anyone other than the king:

“Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went home. And in his upper room, with his windows open toward Jerusalem, he knelt down on his knees three times that day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as was his custom since early days.”

Daniel’s commitment to prayer, even in the face of death, exemplifies the kind of faith that stands firm amidst opposition. His example teaches us that our primary allegiance must always be to God, regardless of the pressures or threats we face from the world around us.

The Power of Integrity and God’s Protection

Daniel’s life demonstrates the power of integrity and the protective hand of God over those who are faithful to Him. Throughout his time in Babylon, Daniel consistently chose to honor God, whether it was by refusing the king’s food, interpreting dreams, or continuing to pray despite the threat of being thrown into the lions’ den.

God’s protection over Daniel is evident not only in his survival of the lions’ den but also in the respect and favor he garnered from multiple kings. Even in a hostile environment, Daniel’s integrity and faithfulness earned him a position of influence, showing that God can elevate and protect those who remain true to Him, even in the most challenging circumstances.

In Daniel 6:22, after being miraculously preserved in the lions’ den, Daniel declared:

“My God sent His angel and shut the lions’ mouths, so that they have not hurt me, because I was found innocent before Him; and also, O king, I have done no wrong before you.”

This powerful testimony underscores the principle that when we walk in integrity and trust in God, He is able to deliver us from any danger.

Lessons from Daniel’s Life and the Handwriting on the Wall

Daniel’s life and the event of the handwriting on the wall offer several key lessons on standing firm in faith amidst opposition. First, Daniel’s unwavering commitment to God teaches us the importance of cultivating a deep and consistent relationship with God through prayer. It is this relationship that provides the strength and courage to stand firm when faced with challenges.

Second, the story of the handwriting on the wall reminds us of God’s sovereignty and His ability to intervene in human affairs. It is a sobering reminder that God is not mocked, and that there are consequences for defying His commands.

Third, Daniel’s integrity and faithfulness, even in the face of potential death, show us the importance of living a life of integrity. When we honor God in our actions, He is faithful to protect and elevate us, even in hostile environments.

Finally, Daniel’s boldness in speaking the truth, regardless of the consequences, challenges us to be courageous in our witness for God. In a world that often pressures us to conform, Daniel’s example inspires us to remain steadfast in our faith and to trust that God is with us, no matter the opposition we face.

Conclusion

The story of Daniel and the handwriting on the wall is a powerful example of standing firm in faith amidst opposition. Daniel’s life teaches us the importance of prayer, integrity, and courage in the face of challenges. As we navigate our own lives, may we draw strength from Daniel’s example, trusting that God is sovereign, faithful, and able to protect and guide us as we stand firm in our faith.
