Sunday Sermon: Standing Firm in Christ While Battling Spiritual Attacks

by Minister Denise N. Fyffe

There is something that has been an ongoing reality in my life—spiritual warfare. Many of you may have heard about spiritual attacks, or perhaps you’ve experienced them yourself. But let me tell you, the battle between good and evil is very real. The devil has been trying to stifle me for years, often attacking me physically in the most vulnerable of moments. These experiences have left no doubt in my mind about the existence of both God and the devil. But even in the midst of these attacks, I want to encourage you—God is faithful, and Jesus’ name is the most powerful weapon we have.

The Attack

One morning, I found myself mid-sleep, mid-waking when my brother left the house. Instantly, I felt something stifling me, as if it was trying to suffocate me with the bed covers. I struggled to remove the covers, but as soon as I succeeded, the blankets came over me again, sealing me in with no way to breathe. I knew what was happening. This wasn’t just some bad dream—this was an attack.

Without hesitation, I began calling on the name of Jesus—the only name that has power over the enemy. “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13 KJV). His name is my shield, my defense, and every time I call on Him, the power of the enemy is broken.

A Pattern of Spiritual Warfare

This wasn’t the first time something like this had happened. There seems to be a pattern which involved my brother, who is not saved. A similar attack happened in early 2014 around 2 a.m., but that time, something extraordinary occurred. As the spiritual attack began, I sensed another entity—a presence of peace—spiritually open the door and call whatever was attacking me to leave me alone. I woke up, but instead of fear, I felt peace. God was there, even during the attack.

Let me be clear: spiritual warfare is real, and it is nothing to take lightly. Ephesians 6:12 (KJV) says, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” The devil doesn’t care whether we’re ready for the fight or not. He comes when we’re vulnerable. But praise be to God—our victory is assured through Jesus Christ.

Fatigued, But Firm in Christ

At times, I’ve been so exhausted and traumatized by these experiences that I’ve felt jaded, tired of the battle. But even in my weariness, I leave it in the hands of God. He watches over me, even when I am too tired to fight. Psalm 121:3-4 (KJV) says, “He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.” God never sleeps, and He never stops protecting His children.

There are countless times I’ve had to fight for my life in these situations. There is no question in my mind about the existence of the spiritual realm. Both sides—good and evil—are very real. But I want to encourage those of you who are not saved: get to know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior.

A Call to Salvation

This is not just about going to church or following religious routines—it’s about having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Do not let church people or anyone else be a hindrance to your salvation. You have to know Christ for yourself. Philippians 2:12 (KJV) tells us, “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” It’s between you and Jesus.

I’ve seen the evil side, and it’s terrifying. I should be in Bellevue by now, but thanks to God’s mercy, I stand here today. I’ve also sensed the goodness of God, His peace that surpasses all understanding. Both sides are tangible—but only one leads to eternal life, and that is Jesus Christ.

The Reality of Spiritual Warfare

We are not immune to spiritual attacks just because we are believers. In fact, the devil often targets those who are walking closely with Christ. 1 Peter 5:8 (KJV) warns us, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” The enemy will try to attack you in your most vulnerable moments, but do not be afraid. We serve a God who is stronger than any force of darkness.

Luke 10:19 (KJV) says, “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” Jesus has given us power over the enemy, and when we call on His name, the devil must flee.

Conclusion

Brothers and sisters, if you haven’t yet surrendered your life to Christ, now is the time. Do not wait. There is a battle being waged in the spiritual realm for your soul, and only through Jesus Christ can you find true protection and peace. John 16:33 (KJV) says, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” Jesus has already overcome, and through Him, you can overcome too.

I urge you today—if you don’t know Jesus, get to know Him now. Don’t wait for another day, another opportunity. Seek Him while He may be found, and don’t let anything stand in your way. Romans 10:9 (KJV) reminds us, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” It’s that simple. Give your life to Christ today.

Closing Prayer

Let us pray.

Heavenly Father, we come before You today, acknowledging the reality of spiritual warfare and the power that lies in Your name. We thank You for Your protection and for the victory that is already ours through Jesus Christ. Father, I pray for every soul here today, especially those who have not yet made You their personal Savior. Lord, touch their hearts, draw them close to You, and give them the strength to surrender their lives to You. Thank You for Your unending love and for the assurance that no weapon formed against us shall prosper. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

Blessing

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May His face shine upon you and give you peace. May you walk in the assurance of His protection, knowing that no weapon formed against you will succeed. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

I hope you find today’s sermon helpful and applicable to your life. I pray that the Word of God works effectively in your life.
