Sunday Sermon: The Power of Fasting, A Journey of Spiritual Endurance
by Minister Denise N. Fyffe
Beloved brothers and sisters, God has a way of revealing His truths to His servants, and sometimes these revelations come in the most unexpected ways. Today, I want to share a powerful truth that has been impressed on me. As I reflect on the weariness and exhaustion that can come with the spiritual battles we face, I realize that this fatigue is not only physical but deeply spiritual. For those of us engaged in intercession, warfare, and spiritual ministry, the toll it takes can be heavy.
I felt this in my own body—my muscles and bones devoid of energy, my spirit exhausted from fighting in the spiritual realm. It wasn’t just my physical excursions that drained me but the intense spiritual warfare that comes with being purpose-driven in the kingdom of God. But God reminded me that fasting—a discipline so crucial yet often neglected—is the key to spiritual endurance and empowerment.
Fasting is a Tool for Spiritual Strength
Fasting is a tool that God has given us to weaken the flesh and strengthen our spirit, making our communication with God clearer and more potent. It is through fasting that our spirits become fully engaged, allowing us to draw nearer to God, hear His voice, and receive revelation.
Isaiah 58:6 (KJV) reminds us, “Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?” Fasting breaks chains and gives us the spiritual stamina we need to endure the race and fulfill our calling.
Biblical Examples of Fasting
The Bible is filled with examples of men and women who used fasting as a powerful tool in their spiritual walk. Let’s look at some of these examples:
Moses Fasted Before Receiving the Commandments – Deuteronomy 9:9-18
Moses fasted for 40 days when he went up the mountain to receive the Ten Commandments. After breaking the tablets due to Israel’s sin, he fasted again for 40 more days. Fasting prepared Moses for one of the most important revelations from God.
Elijah Fasted While Escaping Jezebel – 1 Kings 19:4-8
After his confrontation with the false prophets of Baal, Elijah fasted for 40 days as he journeyed to Mount Horeb, where God strengthened him for the next phase of his ministry.
Esther Fasted for the Safety of the Jews – Esther 4:15-17
When the Jewish people were on the verge of destruction, Esther called for a fast before approaching the king. Through fasting, God gave Esther the wisdom and courage to save her people.
Darius Fasted for the Safety of Daniel – Daniel 6:18-23
King Darius, troubled by Daniel’s fate in the lion’s den, fasted through the night. God honored that fast by protecting Daniel, closing the mouths of the lions.
Jesus Fasted Before His Ministry Began – Matthew 4:1-2
Before Jesus began His public ministry, He fasted for 40 days in the wilderness. This period of fasting prepared Him to withstand the temptations of Satan and empowered Him to carry out His divine mission on earth.
The Purposes of Fasting
Fasting has always played a pivotal role in seeking God’s favor, understanding His will, and accessing His divine power. Here are just a few of the reasons why people in the Bible fasted:
- In Times of War: The Benjamites fasted and defeated their enemies (Judges 20:26).
- For Repentance: The people of Nineveh fasted and repented, and God spared their city (Jonah 3:5).
- In Danger: Ezra fasted for protection as the people returned to Jerusalem (Ezra 8:21, 23).
- For Courage and Wisdom: Esther fasted before risking her life to save the Jewish people (Esther 4:16).
- In Grief and Mourning: David fasted after hearing of Saul and Jonathan’s deaths (2 Samuel 1:12).
- For Spiritual Power: Jesus declared that certain kinds of spiritual breakthroughs only come through prayer and fasting (Mark 9:29).
Fasting Strengthens Our Spirit
As God’s children and His servants, we cannot expect to live effective, purpose-filled lives without incorporating fasting into our spiritual discipline. The days of business as usual are over. For those of us who are called to intercede, to minister, and to fight spiritual battles, fasting is essential. We must weaken our flesh in order to strengthen our spirit. Matthew 6:16-18 (KJV) tells us, “Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.”
Fasting is not about appearances; it’s about communion with God. It is in these secret, intimate moments with Him that our strength is renewed, our minds are cleared, and our spiritual ears are sharpened.
Conclusion
With this understanding, I know that I must embark on a journey of deeper fasting and prayer. If we are to endure as God’s children and fulfill the work He has set before us, we must follow the example of those who came before us—those who fasted and prayed, not only for themselves but for their people, their nation, and their spiritual mission.
I encourage each of you to embark on your own journey of fasting. Whether it’s to seek God’s guidance, to repent, to break strongholds, or simply to draw nearer to Him, fasting will take you to deeper spiritual levels. Let us commit ourselves to a life of prayer and fasting, knowing that in doing so, we strengthen our connection to God and empower ourselves to endure the race set before us.
Closing Prayer:
Let us pray.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of fasting and prayer. Lord, we acknowledge that we need You more than ever, and we ask for Your guidance as we dedicate ourselves to seeking You through fasting. Strengthen us, Lord, as we weaken our flesh and empower our spirits. Help us to endure the race, to fight the battles You have called us to, and to draw nearer to You in every way. We thank You for the examples of Your faithful servants, and we commit ourselves to following in their footsteps. In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.
Blessing
May the Lord bless you and keep you as you dedicate yourself to Him through fasting and prayer. May He give you the strength to endure and the spiritual power to overcome every challenge you face. Go forth in His grace and power, knowing that you are strengthened by His Spirit. Amen.
