Giants of the Faith: C.S. Lewis, The Apologist of Imagination and Reason

by Minister Denise N. Fyffe

Clive Staples Lewis, best known as C.S. Lewis, was one of the most influential Christian thinkers of the 20th century. As a writer, scholar, and apologist, Lewis used his extraordinary intellect and imagination to defend the Christian faith and communicate profound spiritual truths.

His works, from the beloved Chronicles of Narnia to theological classics like Mere Christianity, continue to inspire and challenge believers around the world. This article explores his life, writings, and the enduring impact of his ministry.

Early Life and Atheism

C.S. Lewis was born on November 29, 1898, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Raised in a Protestant household, young Lewis experienced a deep love for literature and mythology, which would later shape his creative endeavors. However, the death of his mother when he was just nine years old and the hardships of World War I led him to reject Christianity and embrace atheism during his teenage years.

As a young man, Lewis pursued academic excellence, studying at Oxford University. He excelled in literature, philosophy, and ancient languages, eventually becoming a professor at Magdalen College, Oxford. Despite his atheism, Lewis remained fascinated by questions of meaning, morality, and the human condition, which would eventually lead him back to faith.

Conversion to Christianity

C.S. Lewis’s journey to Christianity was intellectual as well as spiritual. Influenced by close friends like J.R.R. Tolkien and other members of the literary group known as the Inklings, Lewis began to reconsider his worldview. He found himself drawn to the idea that Christianity provided the most coherent explanation for human existence, morality, and the longing for something beyond this world.

In 1931, after a long internal struggle, Lewis surrendered to God, describing himself as “the most dejected and reluctant convert in all England.” His conversion became the foundation of his future writings, as he sought to articulate and defend the faith that had transformed his life. As Lewis wrote in Surprised by Joy: “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen, not only because I see it but because by it I see everything else.”

Writings and Apologetics

Mere Christianity

One of Lewis’s most enduring works, Mere Christianity began as a series of radio broadcasts during World War II. In this book, Lewis lays out a rational case for Christianity, addressing fundamental questions about God, morality, and the human condition. His argument for Christ as either “Lunatic, Liar, or Lord” remains one of the most cited defenses of the divinity of Jesus (John 14:6: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”).

The Chronicles of Narnia

Through the Chronicles of Narnia, Lewis combined storytelling with profound Christian allegory, using the adventures of children in the magical land of Narnia to explore themes of redemption, sacrifice, and the triumph of good over evil. Aslan, the great lion, serves as a Christ figure, embodying sacrificial love and resurrection (John 10:11: “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep”).

The Problem of Pain and A Grief Observed

Lewis also tackled the difficult question of suffering in works like The Problem of Pain and A Grief Observed. The former offers a theological exploration of why a good God allows suffering, while the latter reflects his personal journey through grief after the death of his wife, Joy Davidman. These works provide comfort and insight to those grappling with loss and doubt (Romans 8:18: “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us”).

Legacy and Influence

C.S. Lewis’s influence extends far beyond his lifetime. His ability to blend reason and imagination has made his works accessible to readers of all ages and backgrounds. As a defender of the faith, Lewis demonstrated that Christianity is both intellectually credible and deeply transformative.

His writings continue to equip believers to engage with skeptics, offering a model of gracious, thoughtful dialogue. Through his works, Lewis reminds Christians of the importance of loving God with both heart and mind (Matthew 22:37: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind”).

Conclusion

C.S. Lewis’s life and writings exemplify the power of faith to transform not only individuals but also the way the gospel is communicated to the world. His legacy challenges believers to think deeply about their faith, to engage culture creatively, and to live lives that reflect the love and truth of Christ.

As we reflect on his impact, may we be encouraged by his words from The Weight of Glory: “There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal.” May we, like Lewis, use our gifts to glorify God and point others to the ultimate reality of His love.

I hope you find this beneficial and that the Word of God works effectively in your life.

Be encouraged and stay blessed.
