Letter From the Prayer Desk: Dear E.M., Seek Wisdom, Discernment, and Spiritual Strength
From the Prayer Desk at Revealing the Christian Life Ministry
Beloved in Christ,
Your questions reflect a deep hunger for truth, clarity and the will of God. God is the source of wisdom, strength and protection. When prayer, family relationships, spiritual experiences and serious life responsibilities become tangled together, return repeatedly to Scripture, prayer, wisdom and sound boundaries.
1. Why Do People Pray at Midnight When Fasting? Is It Biblical?
Scripture records believers praying at midnight. Paul and Silas prayed and sang hymns at midnight in Acts 16:25–26. The Bible also uses night watches as times of vigilance and prayer. However, midnight prayer is not a biblical requirement, and no hour gives a believer automatic spiritual power. God hears prayer throughout the day and night.
If midnight prayer helps you seek God with focus, use it. If another prayer time better fits your responsibilities and health, pray then. For a fuller biblical treatment, read An Exegetical Guide to the 8 Prayer Watches.
2. Is Tithing a Sin? Can I Give My 10% to the Poor Instead?
Tithing itself is not a sin. Under the Old Covenant, tithes supported the Levites and the work of worship. In the New Testament, believers are repeatedly called to generous, willing and cheerful giving (2 Corinthians 9:7). Support the work of God, care for people in need and seek the Holy Spirit’s wisdom rather than giving from fear or manipulation.
3. Family Prayer, Control and Spiritual Boundaries
Prayer should align with the character and teaching of Jesus Christ. Praying for others to fail, using spiritual language to control people, or manipulating others through fear does not reflect Christ’s command to bless and pray for people. Forgiveness does not require agreement with harmful behavior. Healthy boundaries and biblical discernment can coexist with forgiveness.
4. How Can You Discern Visions and Avoid Deception?
Test spiritual experiences rather than accepting everything supernatural at face value.
- Does it agree with Scripture? God will not contradict His Word.
- Does it lead toward Christ, repentance and righteousness? Be cautious of experiences that exalt personal power, fear or confusion above Jesus.
- Can it withstand prayer, time and wise counsel? Discernment does not require haste.
- What is the fruit? Examine whether the experience produces obedience, humility and truth.
5. How Can You Pray for People Involved in Occult Practices?
Intercede without assuming you must carry every burden personally. Pray for salvation, truth, repentance, protection and deliverance. Keep your own life rooted in Scripture and the armor of God (Ephesians 6:10–18). Fasting may accompany prayer, but it should not become a way to prove spiritual strength or ignore your own health and responsibilities.
6. How Can You Discern True Ministers?
- Look for teaching centered on Jesus Christ and Scripture.
- Look for the fruit of the Spirit rather than fear, control or spectacle.
- Look for sound doctrine, humility and accountability.
- Be cautious of financial manipulation, curses, threats and leaders who demand unquestioning personal loyalty.
7. What About Specific Teachers?
Do not make a person’s reputation your final authority. Compare teaching with Scripture, examine fruit and use discernment. The Bible remains the standard.
8. Encouragement for You
- Do not be ruled by fear of spiritual gifts.
- Use biblical boundaries with people who misuse prayer or spiritual authority.
- Anchor yourself in God’s Word daily.
- Let God guide your intercession rather than taking on every burden.
- Do not allow visions, pressure or other people’s claims to replace Scripture and sound wisdom.
A Prayer for Wisdom and Discernment
Heavenly Father, we lift up E.M. before You. Give wisdom, discernment and clarity. Silence every false voice and strengthen the ability to recognize truth. Protect from deception, confusion and fear. Lead into sound biblical fellowship and trustworthy spiritual counsel. Give peace, courage, a sound mind and grace to walk faithfully in what You have assigned. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
E.M., remain grounded in the Word, prayer and wise boundaries. You do not have to solve every spiritual problem at once.
With prayer,
