Dreams and Visions: 6 Guidance Dreams and Visions in the Old Testament
By: Minister Denise N. FyffeWelcome Dreamer, these dreams show steering pivotal decisions from covenant fulfillment in the Old Testament to safeguarding Christ in the New. Here are six dreams in Scripture that function as a divine GPS which gives clear, actionable guidance on what to do, where to go, or how to respond in critical moments:
- Jacob’s Call to Go Home (Genesis 31:10–13) In a dream God tells Jacob to leave Laban’s land and return to Canaan. This guidance spares him from conflict and secures God’s covenant promise.
- Solomon’s Wisdom Request (1 Kings 3:5–15) At Gibeon God appears to Solomon in a dream and invites him to ask for anything. Solomon chooses discernment, and God grants him unparalleled wisdom—shaping his reign.
- Joseph Takes Mary as His Wife (Matthew 1:20–21) An angel appears to Joseph in a dream, telling him not to fear marrying Mary. This direction affirms Jesus’ divine conception and safeguards God’s redemptive plan.
- Joseph Flees to Egypt (Matthew 2:13) Warned in a dream that Herod seeks the child’s life, Joseph immediately takes Mary and baby Jesus to Egypt—preserving the Messiah’s safety.
- Joseph’s Return to Israel (Matthew 2:19–21) After Herod’s death, a second dream directs Joseph back to Israel. Obediently, he settles in Nazareth, fulfilling prophecy about the Messiah’s upbringing.
- Pilate’s Wife’s Midnight Warning (Matthew 27:19) While Jesus stands trial, Pilate’s wife sends word: “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered in a dream today because of him.” Her unsettling vision presses Pilate to hesitate before condemning Jesus.
