Dreams and Visions: How to Interpret Dreams About Bears
By: Minister Denise N. Fyffe
Welcome Dreamer, dreams of bears often surface when we’re grappling with something too big or too fierce to face on our own.
In Scripture, bears embody raw strength and—even when God’s hand is at work—sudden, unstoppable judgment or protection. Think of 2 Kings 2:23–25, where Elisha’s word brings two bears out of the woods to humble mocking youths, or Amos 5:19’s image of one fleeing “as a man flees from a bear” to illustrate the terror of God’s coming wrath.
Even Job 39:1–4 uses the bear’s hiding place and fierce maternal instinct to remind us that some powers are beyond human control. When a bear crashes into your dream, God may be alerting you to a season of reckoning—either a call to repentance before justice falls or an assurance that He alone can tame the wild forces in your life.
But bear-dreams aren’t meant to leave you cowering—they point us back to the Shepherd who “makes the mountains melt like wax” (Psalm 97:5) and who promises to be our refuge when “the earth gives way” (Psalm 46:2).
If that grizzly is prowling your sleep, ask:
- Where am I feeling powerless, angry, or threatened?
- What sins or conflicts have I ignored that now demand God’s intervention?
Then turn to prayerful trust: claim His deliverance (“He will rescue you from the fowler’s snare,” Psalm 91:3), confess what’s stirred by that bear’s roar, and lean into the One whose strength becomes our strength. In this way, a fierce warning dream becomes the springboard for deeper dependence on the God who both warns and sustains.
Note: Your dream can also have a different meaning – unique to you. Therefore, examine the other symbols, characters, and current situation in your life.
