The Christian Life with Colline: The Difference Between Wants and Needs — Finding True Companionship in Christ

Yesterday, I was walking and talking to God, and something powerful rose up in my spirit: There is a difference between wants and needs. Too often, we confuse the two — interpreting them according to our own feelings and desires rather than spiritual truth.

Many say they need a partner, a companion, a husband, a wife — someone to complete them or to make them happy. And while companionship is a beautiful gift from God, it is the context that makes the difference.

We want a spouse, but we do not need one to be fulfilled or joyful in life. God already completed us at creation. Another person only complements what God has already finished.

“Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…’” — Genesis 1:26 (NKJV)

We need Jesus.

We don’t need just any fleshly companion to feel whole. What we truly need is the Holy Spirit — the one who brings peace, joy, and eternal life. The flesh cannot satisfy the spirit. A boyfriend or girlfriend may soothe your loneliness temporarily, but only Jesus brings lasting joy.

“Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” — Psalm 37:4 (NKJV)

“The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” — Matthew 26:41 (NKJV)

Yes, we desire relationships, and yes, marriage is of God. But your identity is not dependent on another human being. You are already complete in Christ.

“And you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.” — Colossians 2:10 (NKJV)

We all need God.

We don’t just want Him — we desperately need Him. The difference is that wants are optional; needs are essential. You can live without your wants, but you cannot live without your needs. And Jesus is our greatest need.

“And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:19 (NKJV)

Even if you don’t have a husband or wife, don’t lose hope. God is the best companion you could ever have. When you develop an intimate relationship with Him, when you seek Him with your whole heart, you will find joy and peace that no human can ever give.

“You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” — Psalm 16:11 (NKJV)

People may fail you, but God never will.

He said:

“I will never leave you nor forsake you.” — Hebrews 13:5 (NKJV)

He is the companion you can trust, believe in, rely on, and depend on. When you’re lonely, don’t just look for someone to fill a void — look to Jesus, the lover of your soul. He will guide you, uplift your spirit, and lead you into your divine purpose. So today, if you’re feeling empty, unloved, or like something is missing, I want to introduce you to the One you truly need, Jesus Christ.

He loves you with an everlasting love.

He fills every gap, heals every wound, and meets every need.

Be encouraged.

Don’t seek just fleshly companionship — seek a divine connection. Let Jesus be your true companion, and you will never walk alone again. Read Only God Can Do It for a related reflection on why God alone is our ultimate source.

Be blessed!

Meditate on God’s Word

Many Christians struggle daily to live according to God’s word. But we need daily nourishment. That is why it is important to read your bible daily; even if it is a few verses and meditate on them.
