Declarations for September: Being an Overcomer
by: Minister Denise N. Fyffe
As we step into the vibrant and transformative month of September, let us focus on the theme of being an overcomer. Just as the leaves begin to change and signal a new season, we too can embrace change and rise above our challenges with the strength and resilience of true overcomers.
King David: A Biblical Example of an Overcomer
The Bible provides numerous examples of individuals who overcame tremendous obstacles through faith and perseverance, and one of the most remarkable among them is King David. His life is a testament to overcoming adversity through unwavering trust in God.
David faced many challenges, starting from his youth. As a shepherd boy, he fought off lions and bears to protect his flock. His faith and courage were further tested when he faced the giant Goliath. Despite his small stature and the immense size of his opponent, David declared in 1 Samuel 17:45-46:
“You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you.”
David’s victory over Goliath was just the beginning. As he grew older, he faced betrayal, persecution, and numerous battles. Despite these hardships, he remained a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22). His psalms reflect his reliance on God for strength and deliverance. Psalm 18:29 declares,
“For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall.”
David’s life exemplifies that with God, all things are possible, and no challenge is insurmountable.
Drawing Inspiration from David
In our modern lives, we encounter various challenges at work, school, and within our families. However, we can draw strength and inspiration from David’s story and other biblical teachings to overcome these obstacles.
- Overcoming Challenges at Work: In the workplace, we may face difficult projects, demanding deadlines, or interpersonal conflicts. Like David, we can trust in God’s guidance and strength. Colossians 3:23 encourages us, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” By committing our work to God, we can rise above challenges and perform with excellence.
- Overcoming Challenges at School: Students often face academic pressures, social issues, and self-doubt. Remembering David’s bravery can inspire students to face their “Goliaths” with confidence. Philippians 4:13 reminds us, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” With faith and perseverance, students can achieve their academic and personal goals.
- Overcoming Challenges in Family Life: Family dynamics can be complex and challenging. Whether dealing with misunderstandings, financial difficulties, or health issues, we can find strength in God’s promises. Joshua 1:9 assures us, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” By leaning on God, we can navigate family challenges with grace and resilience.
Being Overcomers Like Jesus Christ
Jesus Christ, our ultimate example, overcame the world through His love, sacrifice, and resurrection. John 16:33 states, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” By following Jesus’ example, we too can be overcomers in our daily lives.
Jesus faced persecution, betrayal, and crucifixion, yet He remained obedient to God’s will. He showed us that overcoming requires faith, perseverance, and a deep connection with God. As Christians, we are called to reflect Jesus’ resilience and love in all we do.
September is a month of overcoming.
As we reflect on the life of King David and draw inspiration from the ultimate overcomer, Jesus Christ, let us embrace our identity as overcomers. By faith, perseverance, and a deep connection with God, we can conquer any challenge and rise to new heights. May this month be filled with victories, breakthroughs, and divine favor for you and your loved ones. Amen.

Declarations Over My Life (Book Series)
This series, Declarations for My Life, provides bold statements entrenched in the promises of God. As children of God, Christians, we ought to make pronouncements over our lives. We are taught that as sons and daughters of the kingdom, heirs to the royal priesthood of Jesus Christ, we should make declarations and decrees. It is a way in which to exercise our will/authority and cause our purpose for a thing to be made manifest.
Each book in the series is customized, so feel free to get the copy that best suits your household and your needs. You won’t miss out on any relevant and valid information provided.
