Bible Study: Should a Christian Gamble or Play the Lottery?
by Minister Denise N. Fyffe
Gambling and lotteries are increasingly normalized in society, but for Christians, questions arise: Does this behavior align with biblical principles? Is it simply harmless entertainment, or does it pose spiritual risks?
Before we form opinions, it’s essential to understand what gambling and lotteries are and explore what God’s Word says.
What Is Gambling?
Gambling is the act of risking money or valuables on an outcome determined mostly by chance, with the hope of winning something more. This includes casino games, sports betting, online gambling, and the lottery. While it may appear entertaining, gambling often appeals to greed, risk, and the desire for quick wealth.
Lotteries: A Popular Form of Gambling
Lotteries are government-run gambling schemes where people buy tickets, hoping their numbers are randomly selected. Jackpots can be massive, yet the chances of winning are extremely low. Despite this, many participate, often seeing it as a harmless hope for financial breakthrough.
What the Bible Says
Although the Bible doesn’t mention “gambling” directly, it provides wisdom on the motivations and consequences that often surround it.
-
Greed and the Love of Money:
“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil…” — 1 Timothy 6:10 (NKJV)
Gambling often springs from a desire for instant wealth and can lead people down destructive paths. -
Unwise Gain and Financial Stewardship:
“Wealth gained by dishonesty will be diminished, but he who gathers by labor will increase.” — Proverbs 13:11 (NKJV)
Christians are called to work honestly and be good stewards, not chase riches by chance. -
Covetousness:
“You shall not covet…” — Exodus 20:17 (NKJV)
Gambling often involves wanting what others have—money, luxury, or lifestyle—without the discipline of labor.
Common Views Among Christians
Some Christians Say It’s Harmless
Some argue that gambling in moderation is no different from paying for entertainment. As long as it’s not addictive or done irresponsibly, they feel it’s a matter of personal conscience.
Others Strongly Warn Against It
Many pastors and Christian leaders emphasize the dangers:
-
Gambling can become addictive.
-
It often exploits the poor.
-
It contradicts the values of hard work, patience, and faith.
-
It can lead to financial ruin and broken relationships.
Biblical Alternatives to Gambling
-
Trust in God’s Provision:
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” — Matthew 6:33 (NKJV)
God promises to provide. Trusting in luck denies His sufficiency. -
Contentment in God:
“Now godliness with contentment is great gain.” — 1 Timothy 6:6 (NKJV)
Rather than craving quick riches, Christians are called to live contentedly, trusting God. -
Give Generously, Not Gamble Recklessly:
“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” — Acts 20:35 (NKJV)
Money spent on lottery tickets could better serve those in need.
Final Encouragement
The question is not just “Is it wrong?” but “Does it glorify God?” Christians are stewards of all that God provides. Every dollar, every decision, and every desire should align with a heart that seeks God’s will.
