The Christian Life: How to Guard Your Mind and Body with Practical Steps to Overcome Masturbation

By: Denise N. Fyffe

One of the greatest battlegrounds in a believer’s life is the battle for purity. Millions of us have come up against some sort of sexual temptation like masturbation that threatened to erode our purity. However, we are not necessarily open to discussing it. But today, we will speak the truth and shame the devil.

So, understand that you are not alone and nothing is new to anyone under the sun. Masturbation and sexual temptation often creep into daily life – worse if you indulge in pornography – leaving many Christians feeling defeated, ashamed, or distant from God.

Yet the Bible reminds us that our bodies and minds are meant to glorify Him:

“Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” — 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 (NKJV)

This truth sets the foundation for victory. You are not powerless because God has given you tools to guard both your body and your mind.

Why Guarding Against Masturbation Matters

Every sin begins as a thought. When left unchecked, those thoughts lead to desire, which then grows into action. By guarding your heart and mind, you stop the enemy’s schemes before they have the chance to take root.

“Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” — Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV)

Guarding is about creating boundaries, staying alert, and aligning your thoughts with God’s Word. The devil is always lurking around observing looking for a way through your defenses. So, you have to remain vigilant like an actual prison guard would.

Why? Because what is at stake is your very spirit, soul and body.

Practical Steps to Guard Your Mind and Body Against Masturbation

  1. Watch What You Allow In
Avoid TV shows or music, social media, or conversations that trigger lustful desires. The eye is the lamp of the body, and what you watch can influence your spirit.
  2. Fill Your Mind with God’s Word
Daily Scripture reading and meditation renew your thinking. When temptation comes, respond with the Word, just as Jesus did in the wilderness. Use the Word of the Lord like a shield and submit your mind to it daily. The more you read, the more you thinking changes. The more your desire also changes.
  3. Practice Daily Prayer
Ask God to cover your mind with His peace and your body with His strength. Prayers of consecration invite the Holy Spirit to take control. Do this as many times as you need to. Talk to God as if he is in the room watching you when the desire presents itself.
  4. Stay Physically Active
Sometimes temptation grows out of idleness. Exercise, serve, or engage in creative activities to redirect your energy positively. The aim is to not be idle or get into a space where you feel lonely.
  5. Set Healthy Boundaries
If certain situations or people feed temptation, put distance in place. Boundaries are not weakness—they are wisdom. This is your life. Set your rules. Defend your peace of mind. We are all not at the same space or maturity level at any time. If you need to drop certain friends who are triggers, then find new faith believing friends.
  6. Seek Accountability
Share your struggle with a trusted believer. This can be a mature peer your age or a Pastor. Discern those around you. If there are support groups in your city, find one nad attend the meetings. Look out for virtual opportunities as well. Pray together regularly. Breaking secrecy breaks the enemy’s hold.

Spiritual Weapons for Victory

Remember that lust is not just a natural issue—it is also a spiritual one. Equip yourself with fasting, anointing your home and body, and declaring victory over your flesh.

“Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”
— Galatians 5:16 (NKJV)
