The Christian Life with Colline: Depression, Suicide, and the God Who Stays
By: Colline Goulbourne, Evangelizing Servant of God
I am heartbroken over the reports about Tyra Spaulding (former Miss Universe) and others who have taken their lives. Life is not easy—but it is worth the push, worth the press, worth the try. It is worth praying and hoping for God’s best. Depression is real. Mental health struggles are real. I know how it feels. Yet I also know this: when we lay our burdens at the feet of Jesus—everything that is bothering us, troubling us, fighting us—God will stand before us and help us. If we will only believe.
A Burden to Pray
Not long ago, I shared that we need to pray against a suicidal spirit because I felt it lingering in the atmosphere. Now we are hearing so many tragic reports. It cuts deep. You never know what state you might be in at any given moment. Things can happen so suddenly that you wonder, Where did this come from? I’m grieved that I didn’t see Tyra’s videos before her passing. If I had seen even one, I would have reached out with encouragement and prayer. I don’t know what others tried, but my heart aches that I could not.
Depression Is Real—Don’t Take It Lightly
Please don’t say, “That could never happen to me.” We don’t know what may come knocking at our door until it does. But remember: even when the darkness presses in, God is near. He promised, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5, NKJV). His promise is truth. Our part is to trust Him and seek a real, intimate relationship with Him. Salvation anchors the soul when everything else is shaking.
When You Can’t See a Way Out
Some of us have stood in that place where you don’t know what comes next—no answers, no solutions, no clear door out. Depression can lie to your mind and say there is no way through. I’ve been there, so I can say to anyone walking it now: Jesus is the way. “Jesus said… ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life’” (John 14:6). In the fog, hold to His Word:
-
“The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart” (Psalm 34:18).
-
“Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you” (Psalm 55:22).
-
“When my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I” (Psalm 61:2).
What Help Can Look Like (Faith and Wisdom)
God meets us through prayer and also through people and practical steps. If you or someone you love is struggling:
-
Tell someone today. A pastor, trusted friend, or family member. “Bear one another’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2).
-
Seek professional help. Faith and wise care work together. “In the multitude of counselors there is safety” (Proverbs 11:14).
-
Pray the Scriptures out loud. Let truth speak louder than the lies: Psalm 23; Psalm 91; Isaiah 41:10; Philippians 4:6–7.
-
Stay close to community. Isolation feeds despair. Worship, pray, and let others carry you when you are weak (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10).
-
Guard your inputs. Limit doom-scrolling and invite God’s Word, worship, and healthy voices into your day (Philippians 4:8).
A Prayer for the Heavy-Hearted
Father, in the name of Jesus,
We bring every broken heart and weary mind to You. Silence the lies of despair. Let Your light break into the darkness. Fill us with Your peace that passes understanding. Heal the deep places, restore hope, and surround each person with wise, loving support. We declare: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1). Hold us fast, Jesus. Amen.
A Word of Hope
If you are reading this and feel like there is no way forward, please hear me: you are not alone. You are loved. Your life matters. There is help. There is hope. And there is a Savior who sees you, knows you, and will not let go. “I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord” (Psalm 118:17).
If You or Someone You Know Is in Immediate Danger
Please contact your local emergency number right now, or a trusted crisis hotline in your country. Reach out to a nearby pastor, family member, or friend and tell them you need help today. You are not a burden. Your life is a gift.

Meditate on God’s Word
Many Christians struggle daily to live according to God’s word. But we need daily nourishment. That is why it is important to read your bible daily; even if it is a few verses and meditate on them.
