Twenty-Third (23rd) Psalm
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death,
I fear no evil;
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff–they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
The Twenty-Third Psalm is one of the most well-known and beloved passages in the Bible. It is a beautiful poem that expresses the trust and confidence that God’s people have in His care and protection. In this article, we will explore the meaning and significance of this psalm, and how it can inspire us to live a life of faith and gratitude.
The Declaration
The Psalm begins with the declaration: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” This is a powerful statement of faith that acknowledges God as the source of all our needs and desires. God is not just a distant ruler or a harsh judge, but a personal and loving shepherd who guides, provides, and protects His sheep. He knows us by name, He knows our strengths and weaknesses, He knows what we need and what we long for. He is always with us, leading us to green pastures and still waters, restoring our souls and giving us peace.
The Psalm also speaks of the challenges and dangers that we face in our journey through life. We walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we face enemies and evil forces, we experience pain and sorrow. But even in these situations, we do not fear or despair, because God is with us. He comforts us with His rod and staff, He prepares a table for us in the presence of our foes, He anoints our head with oil and fills our cup to overflowing. He assures us of His presence, His power, His provision, and His protection.
The Psalm ends with a confident affirmation of God’s goodness and mercy: “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” This is not a wishful thinking or a vague hope, but a certain promise that God has made to His people.
God is not only our shepherd in this life, but also in the life to come. He will never leave us nor forsake us, He will never stop loving us or caring for us, He will never let us go. He will always be with us, to bless us and to keep us, to make us dwell in His presence and enjoy His glory.
The Twenty-Third Psalm is a precious gift that God has given to His people. It is a song of faith and trust, of comfort and hope, of gratitude and praise. It is a song that we can sing in every season of life, in every circumstance, in every moment. It is a song that reminds us of who God is, who we are, and what He has done for us. It is a song that invites us to follow Him, to love Him, and to worship Him.
