The Mystery of Angels, God’s Heavenly Servant (Part 1)
by Minister Denise N. Fyffe
Throughout the Bible, angels appear as messengers, warriors, and servants of the Most High God. Their presence reminds us that there is more to creation than what our eyes can see — an unseen realm where the hosts of heaven move at God’s command.
In both Old and New Testaments, angels are described as ministering spirits — not to be worshiped, but to serve those who belong to God.
Hebrews 1:14 (NKJV) says:
“Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?”
Defining “Angels”
The word angel comes from the Greek angelos, meaning messenger. Angels are spiritual beings created by God to carry out His will, deliver His messages, and protect His people. They are part of a divine order — intelligent, powerful, and holy — yet fully submitted to God’s authority.
Angels Throughout Scripture
-
In Genesis 3:24, God places cherubim at the east of Eden to guard the way to the Tree of Life.
-
In Daniel 10, angels battle spiritual princes on behalf of nations.
-
In Luke 1, the angel Gabriel brings the message of Jesus’ birth.
-
In Matthew 4:11, angels minister to Jesus after His temptation.
-
In Revelation 5:11–12, countless angels worship before the throne, saying, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain!”
Their Purpose: To Serve God’s Glory
Angels remind us that all of creation is designed for the glory of God. Their actions, from protecting believers to proclaiming divine messages, always point back to Him.
Yet Scripture warns us not to worship angels or seek them for their own sake.
Colossians 2:18 (NKJV) says:
“Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels…”
Our focus should always remain on Christ, the One whom angels serve and adore.
Encouragement for Believers
Just as God sent His angels to guard Daniel in the lion’s den and to minister to Jesus in His trials, He still commands His angels to protect His people today.
Psalm 91:11–12 (NKJV) declares:
“For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.”
Be Encouraged
God’s angels are active, alert, and assigned — carrying out His purposes in ways unseen but deeply real.
