The Christian Life: The Role of Community and Fellowship in Breaking Sexual Strongholds
By: Denise N. Fyffe
Many Christians fight the battle against masturbation, lust, and pornography in silence. Shame tells them, “You can’t tell anyone. What will people think?” But the truth is this: isolation is the enemy’s breeding ground for bondage.
God never intended for us to fight alone. From the beginning, He declared, “It is not good that man should be alone” (Genesis 2:18, NKJV). And in the New Testament, the church is called the body of Christ—interconnected, interdependent, and designed to build each other up.
Why Fellowship Matters
When you isolate yourself:
-
Temptation feels stronger.
-
Guilt multiplies in secrecy.
-
The enemy convinces you that you’re beyond help.
But in fellowship:
-
You find encouragement to keep pressing forward.
-
You learn you’re not the only one struggling.
-
You discover people who can pray and stand with you.
“And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.” — Hebrews 10:24–25 (NKJV)
Accountability Breaks the Power of Secrecy
One of the strongest tools God has given us is accountability. Confessing your struggles to a trusted believer removes the enemy’s foothold. James reminds us:
“Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” — James 5:16 (NKJV)
Here are some practical ways to build accountability:
-
Share your struggle with a mature believer you trust.
-
Ask them to pray with you regularly.
-
Allow them to ask you hard questions and be honest in your answers.
Finding the Right Community
Not every space is safe. Choose wisely. Look for:
-
Believers who are non-judgmental but committed to truth.
-
Prayer groups that emphasize spiritual growth, not gossip.
-
Ministries that provide teaching and deliverance in love.
And if you cannot find this in person, connect online with trustworthy ministries like Revealing the Christian Life Ministry, that share the Word of God faithfully.

A Final Encouragement
Isolation may have kept you bound, but community can help set you free. Surround yourself with people who love God and love you enough to pray, encourage, and walk with you.
You don’t have to fight this alone. The body of Christ is here. We are here. And most importantly, God is with you.
