Dreams and Visions: 6 Dreams and Visions in the Old Testament

Welcome Dreamer, here are 6 more dreams and visions in the Old Testament. These six dream accounts in the Old Testament reflect a consistent pattern of God using dreams to communicate critical guidance, protection, or prophecy—often to shape the course of individuals and nations.
From warning Abimelech not to touch Sarah, to revealing Jacob’s divine connection through a ladder reaching heaven, each dream holds personal and prophetic weight. Joseph’s symbolic dreams ignite the journey that leads to his rise in Egypt, while Pharaoh’s troubling dreams—interpreted by Joseph—forecast a national famine.
Scripture also records revelatory dreams involving people outside Israel, including the Midianite soldier in Judges 7. These biblical examples show that God was not limited to one social or national group when He chose to use a dream, but they should not be turned into a rule that every vivid dream carries an unmistakable message from God.
- Abimelech’s Dream – Genesis 20:3–7
God comes to Abimelech in a dream, warns him concerning Sarah, and commands him to restore Abraham’s wife. The passage also states that God had kept Abimelech from sinning against Him. - Jacob’s Ladder Dream – Genesis 28:10–22
Jacob dreams of a ladder reaching to heaven with angels ascending and descending. - Jacob’s Dream at Padan Aram – Genesis 31:10–13
Jacob recounts a dream in which the Angel of God speaks to him, identifies Himself as the God of Bethel, and tells Jacob to arise and leave the land and return to his family. - Joseph’s Dreams – Genesis 37:5–10
Joseph dreams of his family bowing to him, foreshadowing his future in Egypt. - Pharaoh’s Dreams – Genesis 41
Pharaoh dreams of fat and thin cows, and full and withered ears of grain. Joseph interprets these as a prophecy of famine. - Midianite Soldier’s Dream – Judges 7:13–15
A Midianite soldier recounts a dream of a barley loaf overturning a tent. His companion interprets it as Gideon’s victory; Gideon overhears the interpretation and worships.
