Opening Scripture

“And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.” – Ephesians 4:11–12 (NKJV)

Introduction

This week, I was thinking about how every effective team I’ve ever been part of had clearly defined roles. Whether it was in ministry, work, or even a family project, the success of the mission depended on each person knowing their responsibility and working together. The same is true in the Kingdom of God. In Spiritual Warfare: Born into Battle, I explain that Jesus did not leave His church leaderless on the battlefield. He gave leadership gifts — apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers — to equip the saints, guard the mission, and keep the army healthy. These are not titles for prestige; they are functions for service.

Apostles – The Master Builders

Apostles are pioneers who break new ground and establish strong foundations in doctrine and order. Paul described himself as “a wise master builder” (1 Corinthians 3:10, NKJV). In warfare terms, apostles are like generals who set strategy, plant bases (churches), appoint leaders, and guard the integrity of the gospel. They are sent ones, often moving into uncharted territory to advance the Kingdom. The danger for apostles is drifting into empire-building, so their guardrails are humility, plurality of leadership, and accountability to others in the Body.

Prophets – The Alignment Officers

Prophets are God’s voice to His people, calling them back to covenant faithfulness and exposing the enemy’s schemes. They edify, exhort, and comfort (1 Corinthians 14:3, NKJV), and they bring clarity in seasons of confusion. In Acts 13:1–2, prophets were instrumental in setting direction for the early church. In warfare, prophets help the army stay aligned with God’s orders, ensuring we are fighting the right battles in the right way. Their guardrails are testing every word by Scripture, submitting to leadership, and ministering in love rather than harshness or presumption.

Evangelists – The Frontline Recruiters

Evangelists carry a burning passion to see the lost saved and the bound set free. Philip in Acts 8:5–8 preached Christ in Samaria, and the result was salvation, deliverance, and joy in the city. Evangelists weaken the enemy’s hold by bringing people into the Kingdom, one soul at a time. In warfare, they are the ones who expand the ranks and keep the mission moving forward. Their guardrails are partnering with pastors and teachers to ensure new believers are discipled, avoiding the trap of valuing numbers over nurture.

Why These Roles Matter in Warfare

In Spiritual Warfare: Born into Battle, I note that without apostles, the army loses mission; without prophets, it loses alignment; without evangelists, it loses momentum. Each role strengthens the others, and together they mature the saints, so we are “no longer children, tossed to and fro… by the trickery of men” (Ephesians 4:14, NKJV).

The measure of success is not the size of a platform but the strength and readiness of the people being equipped.

Practical Exercise for the Week

Read Ephesians 4:11–16 in the NKJV each morning this week. As you read, ask the Holy Spirit to show you which of these three roles — apostle, prophet, evangelist — has most influenced your life so far. Write down one way you can honor and support that gift in your local church or ministry this week.

Reflection Question

  • Which of these three roles do I most naturally respond to, and how might God be calling me to grow in my understanding or support of it?

Be Encouraged

This is only the first half of the five-fold ministry. In Spiritual Warfare: Born into Battle, Chapter 7, I go deeper into how each role functions in the Body and in spiritual warfare. If you don’t yet have your copy, I encourage you to get it and use it as your leadership field manual. Understanding these roles will help you recognize God’s order, honor His gifts, and work in unity so the Church moves as one army — and the gates of hell do not prevail.

The Invitation

I invite you today to take a deep look at yourself and reflect on your life. Are you searching for something more? Are you satisfied with how things are today? Is God calling you to confess your sins, be baptized and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? Have you been ignoring him?  What can you do to take the first step?

Trust God to help you with that first step.
