Spiritual Warfare Teaching Series: The Five-Fold Ministry – Part 2
Teaching Series: Born into Battle – Equipping the Saints for Spiritual Warfare By: Minister Denise N. Fyffe
Opening Scripture
“Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.” – 1 Peter 5:2–3 (NKJV)
Introduction
This week, I was reflecting on a season when I felt spiritually worn down. It wasn’t a sermon or a conference that restored me — it was the steady care of a pastor who checked in, prayed with me, and reminded me of God’s promises. That experience brought home the truth that in spiritual warfare, we don’t just need generals and strategists; we also need shepherds and trainers who walk with us through the long haul. In Spiritual Warfare: Born into Battle, I explain that pastors and teachers are essential to keeping the army healthy, grounded, and ready for battle.
Pastors – Shepherds and Field Medics
Pastors are called to feed, guide, and guard the flock (Jeremiah 3:15; Acts 20:28). They bind up the wounded, confront wolves, and cultivate a safe, nurturing environment where believers can grow. In warfare terms, pastors are the field medics — tending to the injured, restoring morale, and ensuring no soldier is left behind. Their ministry is deeply relational, marked by patience, compassion, and courage. The pitfall to avoid is burnout or people-pleasing, and the guardrails are shared leadership, healthy rest rhythms, and the willingness to correct in love. A healthy pastor doesn’t just comfort; they also challenge, ensuring the flock is both cared for and prepared.
Teachers – Doctrine Trainers and Arms Instructors
Teachers are entrusted with handling the Word accurately (2 Timothy 2:15) and turning Scripture into practical, usable training. They help believers understand not just what the Bible says, but how to apply it in daily life. In warfare, teachers are the arms instructors — ensuring every soldier knows how to wield the sword of the Spirit effectively. They fortify discernment, close the door to deception, and help the church mature in sound doctrine. The pitfall is dry intellectualism; the guardrail is marrying truth to love and application (Ephesians 4:15), so that teaching produces transformation, not just information.
How All Five Work Together
When apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers function together, the Body of Christ is equipped, aligned, mobilized, cared for, and grounded in truth. Apostles set mission, prophets keep alignment, evangelists expand the ranks, pastors keep the army healthy, and teachers ensure everyone knows how to use their weapons. Without one of these roles, the church becomes lopsided — strong in one area but vulnerable in another. Ephesians 4:13–14 (NKJV) reminds us that the goal is maturity, unity, and stability, so we are “no longer children, tossed to and fro… by the trickery of men.”
Practical Exercise for the Week
Identify one pastor and one teacher who have impacted your life. Write them a short note or message of encouragement, thanking them for their role in your spiritual growth. If possible, share one specific way their ministry has helped you stand stronger in your faith.
Reflection Question
- Which of the five-fold roles do I most need to receive from in this season, and how will I intentionally position myself to be equipped by it?
Be Encouraged
This completes our study of the five-fold ministry, but it’s only the beginning of learning how to honor and receive from these gifts. In Spiritual Warfare: Born into Battle, Chapter 7 (pp. 119–124), I go deeper into how each role functions in the Body and in warfare, with practical ways to support and partner with them. If you don’t yet have your copy, I encourage you to get it and use it as your leadership field manual. When the five-fold works together and the saints are equipped, the Church moves as one army — and the gates of hell cannot prevail.
