Opening Scripture
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed.” – Luke 4:18 (NKJV)
Introduction
In Mark 5, Jesus stepped onto the shore of the Gadarenes and was immediately confronted by a man tormented by a legion of demons. No one could restrain him, and he lived among the tombs, cut off from society. With a single command, Jesus set him free, and the man was soon clothed, in his right mind, and ready to testify. This is the heart of deliverance ministry — bringing people out of spiritual bondage into the freedom Christ purchased for them.
In Spiritual Warfare: Born into Battle, I explain that deliverance is not a fringe activity for a few specialists; it is part of the gospel mandate for every believer who ministers in Jesus’ name.
What Deliverance Is — and Is Not
Deliverance is the ministry of removing demonic influence or oppression from a person’s life through the authority of Jesus Christ. It is not about theatrics, fear, or chasing manifestations. True deliverance is orderly, Spirit-led, and rooted in love. The goal is not just to cast out a spirit, but to see the person restored, discipled, and filled with the Holy Spirit so the enemy cannot return.
The Biblical Mandate for Deliverance
Jesus made deliverance a normal part of ministry. In Matthew 10:1 (NKJV), He “gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.” The early church continued this work, as seen in Acts 8:7, where “unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed.” Deliverance is not optional for the Church; it is a sign that the Kingdom of God is advancing.
Recognizing the Need for Deliverance
In the book, I outline signs that someone may need deliverance: persistent bondage to sin despite repentance, uncontrollable urges or behaviors, tormenting thoughts, recurring nightmares, or an inability to engage with God’s Word or presence. Discernment is key — not every struggle is demonic, but when it is, no amount of counseling alone will bring full freedom without addressing the spiritual root.
The Role of the Minister
A deliverance minister must be submitted to God, grounded in Scripture, and sensitive to the Holy Spirit. They must operate in authority but also in compassion, remembering that the person is not the enemy — the enemy is the enemy. Prayer, fasting, and a lifestyle of holiness prepare the minister to be an effective vessel for God’s power.
Practical Exercise for the Week
Spend time in prayer asking the Holy Spirit to show you any area of your life where the enemy may have a foothold. Write down any patterns, thoughts, or behaviors He highlights. Then find at least one Scripture that speaks directly to each area and begin declaring those verses daily as an act of alignment with God’s truth.

- Do I see deliverance as a normal part of the gospel, and am I prepared to minister it if the Holy Spirit presents the opportunity?
