Be Enduring

by Minister Denise N. Fyffe

There is a kind of encouragement that sounds good when life is easy and disappears the moment things become painful. Be Enduring is reaching for something sturdier than that.

The collection is built around the reality that faith sometimes looks less like celebration and more like continuing. It speaks to loss, betrayal, waiting, heartbreak, exhaustion and the seasons when a believer may not feel victorious at all. The central message is not that hardship is small. It is that hardship does not get the final word.

Poetry and prayer suit this subject because endurance is emotional as well as theological. A person in a difficult season may understand perfectly well that God is faithful and still feel tired. The poems make room for that tension. They do not require the reader to deny pain before reaching for hope.

The newer Jamaica Pen Publishers edition organizes the journey around breaking, being carried by faith, being strengthened by God and rising again. That movement gives the book a natural emotional arc. Biblical figures such as Hannah, Joseph, Ruth, Elijah, Paul and Mary Magdalene remind the reader that endurance is woven throughout Scripture—not as passive suffering, but as faith that remains present long enough to see what God will do next.

This is a book to open selectively. A reader may find one poem or prayer that fits the present season and stay there for a while. That is not a lesser way to read it. Books of encouragement often become most useful when they are allowed to meet a specific wound instead of being consumed quickly.

If you are standing, kneeling or simply trying not to quit, Be Enduring offers words for the middle of the story—the place after the breaking but before everything has been restored.
