THE POET’S PRAYER • PSALM 14
When People Live as Though God Does Not Matter
By Minister Denise N. Fyffe
Psalm 14 examines the moral confusion that develops when people live as though they are answerable to no one. The issue is not merely what someone says about God, but how a life changes when reverence for Him disappears.
Read Psalm 14
King James Version (KJV) — full chapter
1. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
2. The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.
3. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
4. Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the LORD.
5. There were they in great fear: for God is in the generation of the righteous.
6. Ye have shamed the counsel of the poor, because the LORD is his refuge.
7. Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! when the LORD bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.
“The LORD looks down from heaven upon the children of men.” — Psalm 14:2 (NKJV)
God Sees Beyond Appearances
People can appear successful while living without wisdom, compassion or accountability. Psalm 14 reminds us that God sees the heart and the direction of a life.
For the believer, the response is not pride. We are called to examine ourselves too and keep seeking God with sincerity.
A Prayer from Psalm 14
Lord, keep me from living carelessly as though my choices do not matter. Give me reverence for You and compassion for people who have lost their way.
Help me to seek You honestly, walk uprightly and remember that true wisdom begins with recognizing who You are.
Be encouraged.
