Bible Study: What Is Already in Your Hand? Lessons from Moses, David and the Widow

When people feel overwhelmed by a need, we often focus first on what is missing. We say we need more money, more support, more influence, more time or more resources. Yet several biblical accounts show God beginning His work by asking people to recognize what was already available.

This does not mean every problem can be solved with what we already possess. It means that obedience often begins with a careful look at what God has already placed in our hands.

Moses: What Is That in Your Hand?

In Exodus 4:2, the Lord asked Moses, “What is that in your hand?” Moses answered, “A rod.” To Moses, it was an ordinary shepherd’s staff. But in obedience to God, that ordinary object became associated with signs, confrontation before Pharaoh, the parting of the Red Sea and Israel’s journey through the wilderness.

The rod itself was not magical. The power belonged to God. The lesson is that God can take something familiar and use it beyond the limits we have assigned to it.

Many people overlook their own resources because those resources seem too ordinary. A skill you have used for years may become the foundation for new work. A small room may become a place of ministry. A conversation may open a door. A lesson learned through hardship may become encouragement for someone else.

David: Use What You Know

When David faced Goliath, Saul attempted to place his armor on him. David tried it and then removed it because he had not tested it. Instead, David took his staff, five smooth stones and a sling (1 Samuel 17:38–40).

David did not defeat Goliath because a sling was inherently superior to armor. He used what he had already learned to use. He entered the battle with confidence in God and with tools that were familiar to him.

Sometimes we waste time trying to become someone else before we obey God. We assume we need another person’s platform, personality, resources or methods. But God may be calling us to use what He has already developed in us.

The Widow: Tell Me What You Have in the House

Second Kings 4 tells of a widow whose husband had died, leaving debt behind. The creditor was coming to take her sons. Elisha asked her, “What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?” She replied that she had nothing except a jar of oil.

Her answer is revealing. She first said she had nothing, then remembered the oil. Desperation can make us discount what remains because it looks too small compared with what has been lost.

Elisha instructed her to borrow vessels, shut the door and pour the oil. The oil continued until there were no more vessels. She sold the oil, paid her debt and lived on the rest with her sons.

Again, the oil was not independent of God. The miracle came through divine intervention. But the starting point was something already present in her home.

Three Lessons for Believers

1. Take inventory before declaring that you have nothing.

Ask what knowledge, tools, relationships, opportunities, possessions or abilities are already available. Prayer can open our eyes to resources we have dismissed.

2. Do not confuse the resource with the Source.

Moses’ rod, David’s sling and the widow’s oil were instruments. God remained the Source. Christians must be careful not to put faith in an object, job, person or strategy instead of God.

3. Obedience often gives ordinary things new purpose.

The rod had to be lifted. The sling had to be used. The oil had to be poured. Faith is not passive. When God gives direction, obedience becomes part of the answer.

Questions for Reflection

  • What have I dismissed because it seems too small?
  • What skill has God already allowed me to develop?
  • Am I waiting for resources I do not yet have while neglecting resources I already possess?
  • Have I placed too much trust in the resource instead of God?
  • Is there a clear step of obedience I have delayed?

God does not always work in the way we expect. Sometimes He sends something new. Sometimes He multiplies what is present. Sometimes He redirects us entirely. The important thing is to remain attentive, prayerful and obedient.

Before saying, “I have nothing,” ask again: What has God already placed in my hand?

I hope you find this bible study beneficial and that the Word of God works effectively in your life.

Be encouraged and stay blessed.
