Youth in Ministry: The State of Christianity in Nigeria
By: Sister Afolashade

Nigeria is a country with a diverse population, and Christianity is one of its dominant religions. However, Christians in Nigeria face numerous challenges, including persecution, terrorism, and economic hardship. According to a report by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), over 6,000 Christians were killed in 2020 alone, with many more displaced or injured. As Jesus said in John 16:33, “In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart, I have overcome the world.”
One of the greatest threats to Christians in Nigeria has been the ongoing attacks by Boko Haram, which have resulted in the loss of countless lives and destruction of property. These violent acts have created a climate of fear among Christians. In response, many Christian leaders encourage their congregations to remain steadfast in their faith. Romans 8:31 serves as a source of strength: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” This verse reminds believers that their faith in God will sustain them even in times of adversity.
The Influence of Digital Distractions on Youth
A significant issue among the youth in Nigeria today is the growing influence of smartphones, social media, and digital distractions. Many young people are more focused on their screens than on the pressing issues affecting their nation. Matthew 6:22-23 reminds us of the importance of what we allow into our minds and hearts:
“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness.”
This verse highlights the need for mindfulness in what we consume digitally. Christian leaders urge young believers to be intentional about their spiritual growth, prioritizing time in prayer, Bible study, and community service over excessive engagement with social media.
Corruption and Poor Governance: A Barrier to Progress
Corruption and poor governance remain significant obstacles to both societal progress and the growth of Christianity in Nigeria. Many Christian leaders advocate for transparency, integrity, and righteousness in leadership, urging believers to actively participate in the political process. As Proverbs 29:2 states, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice.” This verse underscores the importance of having godly leaders who prioritize justice and fairness.
Christian leaders continue to call for ethical governance and encourage believers to be proactive in nation-building. Through advocacy, education, and civic engagement, Christians can play a vital role in shaping a society where righteousness prevails.
Conclusion
The state of Christianity in Nigeria is complex and challenging. However, with strong leadership and a commitment to biblical principles, the Christian community can overcome these trials and experience growth. As Christian leaders, we must be guided by love, faith, and purity, providing effective leadership that meets the needs of the people. 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 reminds us: “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”
Despite the trials we face, we must trust in God’s sovereignty and provision, standing together to build a stronger, more resilient Christian community in Nigeria.
To the young believers, remember 1 Timothy 4:12: “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity.”
Now more than ever, the youth must rise up in faith, stand firm in biblical truth, and become leaders in their communities. By seeking God’s wisdom and walking in His ways, the next generation of Nigerian Christians can transform their nation for His glory.
