How to Accomplish Great Tasks with God’s Help: Lessons from Nehemiah

by Minister Denise N. Fyffe

Nehemiah is a compelling figure in the Bible, known for his leadership, determination, and deep reliance on God to accomplish what seemed like an impossible task: rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. Living in a time of great uncertainty and challenge, Nehemiah’s life offers profound lessons on how to undertake significant projects with faith, prayer, and perseverance. This article explores the key moments in Nehemiah’s journey and provides insights on how we can accomplish great tasks with God’s help.

Nehemiah’s Background

Nehemiah was a cupbearer to King Artaxerxes of Persia, a position of considerable influence and trust. Despite his comfortable life in the Persian court, Nehemiah’s heart was deeply burdened for the state of Jerusalem, which lay in ruins. When he learned of the plight of his people and the desolation of the city’s walls, Nehemiah was moved to action, demonstrating that godly leaders are often those who respond to the needs around them with compassion and a willingness to act.

The Power of Prayer and Preparation

Before taking any action, Nehemiah turned to God in prayer. His response to the news about Jerusalem was not to rush into action but to seek God’s guidance. In Nehemiah 1:4-6, we read:

“So it was, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned for many days; I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven. And I said: ‘I pray, Lord God of heaven, O great and awesome God, You who keep Your covenant and mercy with those who love You and observe Your commandments, please let Your ear be attentive and Your eyes open, that You may hear the prayer of Your servant which I pray before You now, day and night, for the children of Israel Your servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel which we have sinned against You.’”

Nehemiah’s prayer is a model of humility, confession, and dependence on God. He acknowledged the sins of the people, included himself in their shortcomings, and appealed to God’s covenant faithfulness. This demonstrates that effective leadership begins with seeking God’s will and aligning ourselves with His purposes.

After his prayer, Nehemiah approached King Artaxerxes with a request to return to Jerusalem and rebuild its walls. His careful preparation, coupled with God’s favor, resulted in the king granting him permission, along with resources and authority to carry out the task. This illustrates the importance of both prayer and practical preparation in accomplishing great tasks. Nehemiah’s example teaches us that while we rely on God, we must also be diligent in planning and preparing for the work ahead.

Overcoming Opposition with Faith

As Nehemiah began the work of rebuilding the walls, he faced significant opposition from surrounding enemies. Figures such as Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem mocked and threatened the Israelites, attempting to discourage and derail the project. However, Nehemiah remained steadfast, responding to their threats with prayer and action. In Nehemiah 4:8-9, we see his response:

“And all of them conspired together to come and attack Jerusalem and create confusion. Nevertheless, we made our prayer to our God, and because of them we set a watch against them day and night.”

Nehemiah’s response to opposition was twofold: he prayed to God for protection and took practical steps to safeguard the work. He stationed guards and armed the workers, ensuring that the work continued despite the threats. This combination of faith and practical action is a powerful lesson in how to deal with opposition. Nehemiah understood that while God was in control, he also had a responsibility to act wisely and protect his people.

The opposition did not stop there. The enemies attempted to lure Nehemiah away from his work through deceit and intimidation, but Nehemiah refused to be distracted. In Nehemiah 6:3, he famously replied:

“So I sent messengers to them, saying, ‘I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you?’”

Nehemiah’s focus and determination were key to completing the task. He recognized the importance of the work God had called him to do and refused to be sidetracked by the schemes of his enemies. This teaches us the importance of staying focused on our God-given tasks, even when faced with distractions or opposition.

The Completion of the Wall and Renewal of the Covenant

Through prayer, perseverance, and strategic action, Nehemiah and the people of Jerusalem completed the wall in just 52 days, an extraordinary achievement that left their enemies in awe. Nehemiah 6:15-16 records the completion:

“So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days. And it happened, when all our enemies heard of it, and all the nations around us saw these things, that they were very disheartened in their own eyes; for they perceived that this work was done by our God.”

The swift completion of the wall was a testament to God’s favor and Nehemiah’s leadership. It demonstrated that when God is with us, even the most daunting tasks can be accomplished. The successful rebuilding of the wall also set the stage for a spiritual renewal among the Israelites. Under Nehemiah’s leadership, and with the guidance of Ezra the scribe, the people gathered to hear the reading of the Law, leading to a renewed commitment to God’s covenant.

In Nehemiah 8:8-9, we read about this pivotal moment:

“So they read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God; and they gave the sense, and helped them to understand the reading. And Nehemiah, who was the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, ‘This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn nor weep.’ For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the Law.”

This spiritual revival was a direct result of the physical and moral rebuilding of Jerusalem under Nehemiah’s leadership. It highlights the connection between godly leadership and the spiritual well-being of a community.

Lessons from Nehemiah’s Life

Nehemiah’s life offers several key lessons on how to accomplish great tasks with God’s help. First, his story teaches us the importance of prayer and preparation. Nehemiah’s success was rooted in his deep dependence on God and his careful planning. Before taking any action, he sought God’s guidance and prepared thoroughly, which enabled him to overcome obstacles and achieve his goals.

Second, Nehemiah’s response to opposition demonstrates the power of combining faith with practical action. He understood that while God was in control, he had a responsibility to act wisely and protect the work God had entrusted to him. This teaches us to be vigilant and proactive in the face of challenges, trusting God while also doing our part.

Finally, Nehemiah’s focus and determination in completing the wall highlight the importance of staying committed to the tasks God has given us. Despite numerous distractions and threats, Nehemiah remained focused on his mission, leading to the successful completion of the project and the spiritual renewal of the people.

Conclusion

The story of Nehemiah is a powerful example of how to accomplish great tasks with God’s help. His leadership, characterized by prayer, preparation, faith, and perseverance, provides a model for anyone facing significant challenges. As we seek to fulfill the tasks God has given us, may we draw strength from Nehemiah’s example, trusting in God’s guidance and remaining steadfast in our work, knowing that with God’s help, all things are possible.
