How to Lead with Courage in Times of Crisis: Lessons from Joshua

by Minister Denise N. Fyffe

Joshua, the successor of Moses, led the Israelites into the Promised Land during a time of great uncertainty and challenge. His leadership is a powerful example of how to navigate crises with faith, courage, and a reliance on God’s promises. The story of Joshua spans two significant volumes of Israel’s history: the conquest of Canaan and the establishment of the Israelites in the land. This article explores key moments in Joshua’s life, offering insights on how we can lead with courage in times of crisis.

Joshua’s Background

Joshua first appears in the Bible as a military leader who played a crucial role in Israel’s journey to the Promised Land. As one of the twelve spies sent to explore Canaan, Joshua, along with Caleb, brought back a report full of faith in God’s ability to deliver the land into their hands, despite the presence of formidable enemies. While the other ten spies spread fear and doubt among the people, Joshua and Caleb stood firm in their trust in God’s promises. This steadfast faith would later define Joshua’s leadership as he took over from Moses.

Stepping into Leadership

After the death of Moses, God commissioned Joshua to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land. This transition marked a critical moment for the nation, as they faced the daunting task of conquering a land filled with powerful enemies.

In Joshua 1:6-7, God commands Joshua:

“Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go.”

These words were not just a call to military action but a call to spiritual leadership. God’s command to be strong and courageous was grounded in the assurance of His presence and the promise that He would be with Joshua, just as He was with Moses. This foundational moment teaches us that true leadership, especially in times of crisis, is rooted in a deep trust in God’s promises and His presence.

The Crossing of the Jordan

One of the first major challenges Joshua faced as a leader was the crossing of the Jordan River. The river was at flood stage, presenting a seemingly insurmountable barrier to the Israelites. However, God instructed Joshua to have the priests carry the Ark of the Covenant into the river. As soon as the priests’ feet touched the water, the river stopped flowing, allowing the entire nation to cross on dry ground (Joshua 3:14-17).

This miraculous event not only demonstrated God’s power but also established Joshua’s leadership in the eyes of the people. It was a clear sign that God was with Joshua, just as He had been with Moses during the parting of the Red Sea. This moment underscores the importance of following God’s instructions precisely, even when they seem impossible, and trusting Him to make a way where there seems to be no way.

The Conquest of Jericho

The battle of Jericho is one of the most famous stories in the Bible and a significant moment in Joshua’s leadership. God gave Joshua unconventional instructions for conquering the city: the Israelites were to march around the city once a day for six days, and on the seventh day, they were to march around it seven times while the priests blew trumpets. Then, they were to shout, and the walls of Jericho would fall (Joshua 6:2-5).

Joshua obeyed God’s commands without hesitation, and the walls of Jericho fell as promised, leading to a decisive victory for Israel. This event illustrates that successful leadership in times of crisis often requires faith to follow God’s guidance, even when His instructions defy conventional wisdom. Joshua’s unwavering obedience to God’s plan demonstrates the power of faith-driven leadership.

The Renewal of the Covenant at Shechem

As Joshua’s leadership neared its end, he gathered the Israelites at Shechem to renew their covenant with God. In Joshua 24:14-15, Joshua challenges the people to choose whom they will serve:

“Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord! And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

This powerful declaration of faith serves as a model for leaders to commit themselves and those they lead to serving God wholeheartedly, especially in times of crisis. Joshua’s call to covenant renewal emphasizes the importance of spiritual integrity and the need to remain faithful to God’s commandments.

Lessons from Joshua’s Life

Joshua’s life offers several key lessons on how to lead with courage in times of crisis. First, his story teaches us that leadership is grounded in trust in God’s promises. Joshua’s confidence in God’s faithfulness enabled him to face overwhelming challenges with strength and courage.

Second, Joshua’s leadership demonstrates the importance of obedience to God’s instructions, even when they seem illogical or difficult. Whether crossing the Jordan or marching around Jericho, Joshua’s willingness to follow God’s guidance precisely led to miraculous outcomes.

Finally, Joshua’s commitment to renewing the covenant at Shechem underscores the importance of spiritual leadership. True leaders not only guide others through crises but also lead them in renewing their commitment to God, ensuring that their faith remains the foundation of their actions.

Conclusion

The story of Joshua is a powerful example of courageous leadership in the face of crisis. His life teaches us that true leadership is rooted in trust in God, obedience to His word, and a commitment to spiritual integrity. As we face our own challenges, may we draw strength from Joshua’s example, leading with courage and confidence, knowing that God is with us every step of the way.
