How to Fulfill Your Purpose in God’s Timing: Lessons from Esther

by Minister Denise N. Fyffe

The story of Esther is one of the most compelling narratives in the Bible, showcasing how God’s providence works through ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary purposes. Esther, a young Jewish woman who became queen of Persia, was positioned by God “for such a time as this” (Esther 4:14), to save her people from destruction. Her life is a powerful example of courage, faith, and the importance of trusting in God’s timing. This article explores the key moments in Esther’s life and offers insights on how we can fulfill our purpose in God’s perfect timing.

Esther’s Background

The Book of Esther is set during the reign of King Ahasuerus (Xerxes I) of Persia, a vast empire stretching from India to Ethiopia. Esther, originally named Hadassah, was a Jewish orphan raised by her cousin Mordecai. Through a series of divine orchestrations, Esther was chosen to become queen after the previous queen, Vashti, was deposed. Despite her humble beginnings and the risks involved, Esther found herself in a position of great influence at a critical moment in her people’s history.

Embracing God’s Purpose: Esther’s Rise to Queenship

Esther’s rise to queenship is a testament to how God places His people in positions of influence according to His purpose and timing. When King Ahasuerus sought a new queen, Esther was among the young women brought to the palace. Despite the odds, Esther found favor in the eyes of everyone who saw her, including the king, who made her his queen (Esther 2:17):

“The king loved Esther more than all the other women, and she obtained grace and favor in his sight more than all the virgins; so he set the royal crown upon her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.”

Esther’s elevation to queenship was not merely a matter of chance; it was a part of God’s divine plan. This moment teaches us that God’s timing and placement in our lives are often beyond our understanding. We may not always see the bigger picture, but when we trust in God’s providence, we can be confident that He is guiding our steps toward fulfilling His purpose.

Courage in the Face of Danger: Esther’s Bold Decision

The defining moment of Esther’s story comes when she is faced with the news of Haman’s plot to annihilate the Jewish people. Haman, a high-ranking official in the Persian empire, harbored a deep hatred for the Jews, particularly Mordecai, and convinced the king to issue a decree for their destruction. Mordecai urged Esther to go before the king and plead for the lives of her people. However, approaching the king without being summoned was punishable by death, a risk that weighed heavily on Esther.

In Esther 4:14, Mordecai’s words to Esther highlight the providential nature of her situation:

“For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

These words spurred Esther into action. She asked Mordecai to gather all the Jews in Susa to fast for three days, and she, along with her maidens, did the same. Afterward, she bravely approached the king, saying,

“I will go to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish!” (Esther 4:16).

Esther’s courage in the face of danger is a powerful lesson on fulfilling God’s purpose, even when it requires great personal risk. Her willingness to act, despite the potential consequences, demonstrates that fulfilling our God-given purpose often involves stepping out in faith and trusting that God will protect and guide us.

God’s Timing and Deliverance: The Reversal of Haman’s Plot

Esther’s boldness paid off, and through a series of divinely orchestrated events, the tables were turned on Haman. The king granted Esther’s request, and Haman was exposed and hanged on the very gallows he had prepared for Mordecai (Esther 7:9-10). Moreover, the king issued a new decree allowing the Jews to defend themselves, leading to their deliverance from annihilation (Esther 8:11-12).

This dramatic reversal of fortune underscores the importance of God’s timing in fulfilling His purposes. Esther’s actions were not only timely but also aligned with God’s greater plan for the salvation of His people. Her story reminds us that when we act in accordance with God’s will, He is faithful to bring about the outcomes He has ordained.

Lessons from Esther’s Life

Esther’s life offers profound lessons on how to fulfill our purpose in God’s timing. First, her rise to queenship teaches us that God’s positioning of us in certain roles or circumstances is often part of His divine plan, even when we don’t fully understand it. We must trust that God is at work behind the scenes, preparing us for the tasks He has set before us.

Second, Esther’s courage in confronting the king reminds us that fulfilling our purpose often requires boldness and a willingness to take risks. When faced with challenges, we should seek God’s guidance, as Esther did through fasting and prayer, and then step out in faith, trusting that God will lead us.

Finally, the deliverance of the Jewish people highlights the importance of timing in God’s plans. Esther acted at the right moment, and her obedience led to the salvation of an entire nation. This teaches us that while we may not always see immediate results, God’s timing is perfect, and He will bring His plans to fruition in His time.

Conclusion

The story of Esther is a powerful example of how God works through individuals to accomplish His purposes. Her life demonstrates the importance of trusting in God’s timing, embracing the roles He has placed us in, and acting with courage when faced with challenges. As we seek to fulfill our purpose in God’s timing, may we draw inspiration from Esther’s example, knowing that we, too, are called “for such a time as this.”
