Dreams and Visions: 6 More Dreams, Visions & Revelation Encounters in the Old Testament

Welcome Dreamer, here are six more Old Testament revelation encounters involving dreams, visions, and other direct encounters with God. These accounts show several ways God revealed His will, presence, judgment, guidance, and calling in Scripture.
In young Samuel’s nighttime encounter, God calls him directly; 1 Samuel 3 later describes the message as a vision and confirms Samuel as a prophet (1 Samuel 3:15, 20). Solomon’s dream becomes the setting for his famous request for wisdom, a moment that defines his reign. Elijah’s Horeb experience is not identified as a dream or vision; it is a direct encounter in which he hears the Lord after the wind, earthquake, and fire (1 Kings 19:11–13).
Isaiah and Ezekiel are granted awe-inspiring visions of God’s glory and judgment, serving as the foundation for their prophetic ministries. Daniel’s dreams and interpretations offer sweeping insight into future kingdoms, affirming his role as a trusted servant in exile and as a bearer of apocalyptic revelation.
Together, these six moments show that biblical revelation came through dreams, visions, and other direct encounters with God. The form of revelation should be identified according to what the biblical text actually says.
- Samuel’s Calling – 1 Samuel 3:1–20
This is a nighttime call from God, not a dream. The chapter later refers to the revealed message as a vision and confirms Samuel as a prophet (vv. 15, 20). - Solomon’s Dream – 1 Kings 3:5–15
God appears to Solomon in a dream and offers him anything—Solomon chooses wisdom. - Elijah at Horeb – 1 Kings 19:9–18
This passage is not identified as a dream or vision. Elijah experiences a direct encounter with the Lord and hears His voice after the wind, earthquake, and fire. - Isaiah’s Vision of God – Isaiah 6:1–8
Isaiah sees the Lord seated on a throne, surrounded by seraphim. - Ezekiel’s Visions – Ezekiel 1; 8; 37; 40–48
Ezekiel sees the glory of God, the valley of dry bones, and a vision of a new temple. - Daniel’s Visions and Interpretations – Daniel 2; 4; 7–12
Daniel interprets Nebuchadnezzar’s dreams and receives apocalyptic visions of future kingdoms.
