Dreams and Visions: Standing Firm at the Staircase of Transition to Guard Your Spiritual Authority

Dreams may sometimes prompt reflection on our spiritual condition or circumstances, but they should not automatically be treated as a precise map of where we “stand in the Spirit.” In one dream, someone found themself on a staircase, standing between the sixth and fifth grade levels of their former school. A familiar man approached, with the intent to overwrite what they did and to take authority that did not belong to him. With boldness, the person took the man’s face, spoke to him, but restrained themself. They stepped back beside a tall man who was on the right beside them. The other man was forced to back down and he went down the stairs. In this personal interpretation, the dream can be read as a picture of guarding boundaries and remaining discerning during transition. That interpretation should be held humbly and tested rather than treated as a universal rule.

Staircases: Places of Transition

Genesis 28:12 records Jacob dreaming of a ladder or stairway reaching to heaven with angels ascending and descending. The passage describes a divine encounter, but Scripture does not establish stairs or levels as a universal symbol of promotion or spiritual transition in every dream. In my interpretation, the staircase suggested decision, movement, and transition because of its school-grade setting. I do not treat that as a biblical rule that stairs always mean “graduation in the Spirit,” nor assume that resistance during transition automatically proves demonic opposition.

The Challenge of Opposition

I understood the man’s attempt to “overwrite” the person as an image of pressure, interference, or boundary violation. A dream figure should not automatically be identified with Satan, a demon, or a real person’s hidden spiritual activity without other evidence. Yet Revelation 12:11 reminds us:

“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.”

Our testimony, when spoken with the authority of Christ, becomes a weapon that pushes back every demonic overwrite.

Charging in the Name of Jesus

In Acts 16:18, Paul turned to the spirit of divination in a slave girl and declared: “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” Immediately, the spirit left. Likewise, in the dream, speaking with authority was not just resistance, it was legal authority in the spirit realm. The name of Jesus is the ultimate authority to counter any usurper or intruder.

Lessons for the Believer

1. Expect Opposition at Transition Points – When you’re moving from one level to the next, don’t be surprised if resistance shows up.
2. Guard Your Spiritual Inheritance – The enemy wants to overwrite what God has written about you. Stand firm and don’t yield ground.
3. Speak up and Use the Name of Jesus with Boldness – It is your spiritual authority and weapon. Do not hesitate to wield it when confronted.
4. Seek Wise Support – In this personal interpretation, the tall man standing nearby may suggest support or strength. Scripture does not establish a tall figure on the right as a fixed symbol of God’s strength or angelic presence.

The Takeaway

Every believer will face moments when someone—or something—tries to take their place, overwrite their authority, or silence their voice. Do not yield. Stand firm on the landing of transition and declare boldly. Your authority is not based on who you are, but on who you belong to. The Lion of Judah stands with you, ensuring your words carry weight in Heaven and on earth. Note: Your dream can also have a different meaning – unique to you.
