Be Encouraged: Coping with War and Maintaining Your Christian Faith
By: Minister Denise N. Fyffe
War is one of the most devastating realities that can befall a nation or community. It disrupts lives, separates families, and shakes the very core of human stability. In such times, when uncertainty and fear dominate the day, holding on to faith may feel difficult—but it is in these very moments that faith becomes most essential.
As Christians, we are not exempt from the suffering that comes with conflict. We grieve losses, face hardship, and walk through the shadows of war just as others do. Yet, we carry a hope and a strength that the world cannot give. The Word of God equips us with truth, peace, and resilience. In times of war, we must lean on that truth more than ever.
Anchoring in the Word of God
The Bible is filled with stories of people who endured conflict and oppression yet remained faithful to God. From David fleeing Saul’s armies to Daniel in exile, from the early church under persecution to Jesus Himself in Gethsemane, we are reminded that God’s people have always faced trials. But they also found refuge in Him.
Psalm 46:1 tells us, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” This verse doesn’t promise the absence of trouble—it promises God’s presence in it. Even amid destruction, when all seems lost, we are not alone.
Keeping a Strong Prayer Life
In times of war, prayer is a lifeline. It is our direct connection to the One who sees all and knows all. When the news is troubling and the heart feels heavy, lift your voice in prayer. Whether in whispers or in tears, God hears.
Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Even in bomb shelters, refugee camps, and frontline trenches, prayer remains powerful. It brings peace to the soul when the world outside is chaos. It restores clarity and hope.
Fellowship and Community Support
The early church thrived in times of persecution because believers clung to one another. In Acts 2, we read how they shared meals, resources, and encouragement. The same principle applies today. Lean on your Christian brothers and sisters. Share your fears, pray together, worship together—even if it must be done in secret or in small gatherings.
A faith community offers more than just spiritual nourishment—it offers strength, companionship, and a sense of purpose. When one is weak, others can lift them up. Together, faith is fortified.
Living as a Light in the Darkness
One of the greatest testimonies in times of war is the Christian who continues to love, serve, and hope in Christ. You may not be able to stop the war, but you can be a refuge for someone who is hurting. You can:
- share a Bible verse
- offer food
- simply sit with someone in silence.
These small acts become powerful witnesses.
Matthew 5:14-16 says, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden… Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Your light matters—even if it feels small. It might be the only hope someone sees today.
Trusting God’s Greater Plan
While war brings immense suffering, we must never forget that God is still sovereign. He is not absent. His plans are not defeated by human actions. Romans 8:28 encourages us, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”
This promise does not mean all things are good, but that God can redeem even the worst situations. He can use your witness, your endurance, and your faith in ways that bless others and glorify Him.
The Takeaway
In times of war, it is natural to feel fear, sadness, or even anger. But as Christians, we are called to endure with faith and hope. Keep praying. Keep reading the Word. Keep serving those around you. And above all, keep trusting God.
Even when the ground shakes, our foundation is firm in Christ. Let your life be a reminder that faith can stand strong, even in the fiercest storm. May you find peace that surpasses understanding, strength for each new day, and assurance that God is with you always.
