The Christian Life: Spiritual Warfare and the Battle Against Lust
By: Denise N. Fyffe
Lust is not only a physical struggle—it is also a spiritual battle. The enemy uses it as a weapon to enslave believers, weaken their walk with God, and keep them bound in shame. But the Word of God reminds us that the battle belongs to the Lord, and He has given us spiritual weapons to overcome.
“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds.” — 2 Corinthians 10:4 (NKJV)
Recognizing Lust as a Spiritual Stronghold
Many who wrestle with masturbation, pornography, or lustful thoughts believe it is purely a weakness of the flesh. In truth, lust often grows into a stronghold that must be confronted through spiritual warfare. When thoughts and habits are continually repeated, they open spiritual doors for the enemy. And those doors are not easy to close because they gain legal grounds for causing issues in your life.
That is why Jesus said:
“Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” — Matthew 26:41 (NKJV)
Spiritual Weapons for Victory
-
Prayer and Fasting
Fasting weakens the desires of the flesh and sharpens your spirit. Combine it with targeted prayer to destroy strongholds. Ensure to check out several resources on fasting. -
Declarations of Deliverance
Speak Scripture aloud daily. Declare freedom in Christ over your body and mind. For example, declare: “I walk in the Spirit, and I will not fulfill the lust of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16). -
Anointing and Consecration
Anoint your body, your room, and your belongings with oil, consecrating them to God. This establishes the territory of your life as holy ground. -
The Word as a Sword
Meditate on and use verses like Job 31:1: “I have made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I look upon a young woman?” (NKJV). Scripture is your weapon against temptation. -
Worship and Praise
When tempted, worship shifts the atmosphere. Lust cannot thrive where God is glorified. Find your favorite praise and worship playlist and get lost in God. Be careful not to mix up ‘worldly/secular like Christian music’ with true worship songs. I recommend artists like Cece Winans, Hillsong, Lauren Daigle, Chevelle Franklin and Pastor Donnie McClurkin. -
Accountability
Share your struggles with a trusted believer. The enemy loses power when secrecy is broken. But be careful and choose wisely.
Prayer for Deliverance
“Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus, I take authority over every spirit of lust and sexual bondage that has tried to control my life. By the blood of Jesus Christ, I break every stronghold, every cycle, and every pattern of sin. I declare my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. From today, I walk in purity, holiness, and victory. Amen.”
Resources to Strengthen Your Battle
For deeper strategies on overcoming lust and walking in victory, I encourage you to read my book Spiritual Warfare: Born into Battle. It is a practical and powerful resource for believers who know they are in a daily battle.

Final Encouragement
The battle against lust is not fought in your own strength. Victory is found in Christ alone. Each day you resist, you grow stronger. Each time you stand on the Word, the enemy’s grip weakens.
You are not defeated—you are more than a conqueror in Christ Jesus.
