Sunday Sermon: Desperate Times Calls for Desperate Measures in Spiritual Warfare
By: Minister Denise N. Fyffe
War has a way of shaking the very core of human existence—disrupting families, uprooting homes, dismantling futures. The cries of children, the rubble where homes once stood, and the haunting uncertainty of tomorrow weigh heavily on the hearts of those caught in the crossfire.
But for the believer, even in war, there is still hope. Even when the earth quakes, the Spirit of God still speaks. And He is speaking now.
I was working on my book, Spiritual Warfare: Born into Battle, and it draws deeply from the battlefield experiences—both physical and spiritual—that define the Christian walk. For over 30 years, I have walked through valleys that have tested every part of my soul. I have come to understand that the spiritual intensity of some trials mirrors the warfare we see in the physical world.
Yet today, my heart especially goes out to those who are literally living through bombs, evacuations, hunger, and loss—in nations like Ukraine, Sudan, Gaza, the Congo, Russia, Yemen, and others where conflict is daily and brutal. You are not forgotten.
When the World Is Falling Apart—Hold On to the Rock
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
— Psalm 46:1 (NKJV)
Desperate times demand desperate measures—not just in strategy for survival, but in spiritual endurance. When everything around you is being stripped away, it is in radical faith that you will find strength. When there is no food on the table, when the bombs are falling, when the night is long and filled with fear, let this truth anchor you:
God is still on the throne.
You may be in a physical war zone, but your soul need not be lost to despair. The battlefield you’re on now is more than political—it is spiritual. The enemy of your soul wants you to give up, curse God, abandon hope. But this is where desperate spiritual warfare must rise up from within you.
What Does Desperate Spiritual Warfare Look Like?
Desperate spiritual warfare is not polished. It is raw. It is real. It is your knees on the ground at midnight, your tears mingling with dust, your lips whispering Jesus’ name because it’s all you have the strength to say.
It looks like:
-
Praying when you don’t have the words.
-
Quoting Psalm 91 over your children as sirens blare.
-
Standing in faith that though the earth be moved, God will not leave you.
-
Singing songs of hope in bomb shelters.
-
Forgiving your enemies when hatred could destroy you from within.
This kind of warfare doesn’t always look victorious on the outside—but in heaven, it is powerful. Every prayer is a weapon. Every act of kindness is a counterattack. Every refusal to give up is a declaration that God reigns, even in chaos.
You Are a Beacon of Light in the Darkest Places
“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”
— Matthew 5:14 (NKJV)
Many of you reading this are not just survivors—you are chosen to be beacons. You may not feel like it, but your endurance, your quiet strength, and your faith under pressure is speaking to others. People around you are watching how you respond to crisis. And without knowing it, you are revealing the hope of Jesus Christ to them.
Even when you are scared. Even when you are tired. Even when you’re holding it together by a thread.
God Is with You, Even in the War Zone
Jesus never promised that life would be without trouble. In fact, He warned us:
“In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
— John 16:33 (NKJV)
The Lord has not abandoned you. He walks beside you in the ruins, just as He walked with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fire. He is your Jehovah Shalom, your peace in the storm. And in the end, whether here or in eternity, you will see the victory.
Declarations for the War-Weary
Declare these truths today:
-
I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. (Psalm 118:17)
-
Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. (Psalm 23:4)
-
No weapon formed against me shall prosper. (Isaiah 54:17)
-
The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? (Psalm 27:1)
A Prayer for You Today
Father God, for every person in a war-torn nation reading this, I ask for divine protection and strength. Let angels stand guard over them. Let peace flood their hearts in the midst of turmoil. Provide miraculously—food, shelter, safety, and hope. And let them know that You are with them, holding them up when everything else falls. In Jesus’ name, amen.
You Are Not Forgotten
If you’re reading this in a shelter, a refugee camp, a war zone—or even in a place of spiritual isolation—know this: God sees you. And so do we. You are in our prayers. And your fight of faith is not in vain.
The battle is fierce. But our God is fiercer still.
Stay in the fight. Stay in faith. You were born for such a time as this.
