Teaching Series: Born into Battle – Equipping the Saints for Spiritual Warfare

Opening Scripture

“Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.” – 1 Corinthians 14:1 (NKJV)

Introduction

Earlier this week, I was in a conversation where someone shared how a single prophetic word years ago had kept them anchored through storms they never saw coming. It reminded me that the gifts of the Spirit are not just for the moment they are given — they can have ripple effects for years, even decades. In Spiritual Warfare: Born into Battle, I explain that these gifts are supernatural aids, given by the Holy Spirit, to meet specific needs in the heat of battle. They are not for show; they are for service.

The Remaining Six Gifts

Gifts of Healings – The plural reminds us that healing can manifest in many ways: physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual. Jesus “went about… healing all who were oppressed by the devil” (Acts 10:38, NKJV). In warfare, this gift breaks the enemy’s affliction and testifies that the Kingdom of God has come near. Sometimes healing is instant; other times it unfolds over days or weeks.

Working of Miracles – This is the Spirit’s operation of power beyond natural laws. In Acts 9:40, Peter raised Tabitha from the dead; in Acts 19:11–12, extraordinary miracles were done through Paul. In warfare, miracles can dismantle intimidation, provide supernatural supply, or deliver from danger in ways that defy explanation.

Prophecy – A Spirit-inspired message that edifies, exhorts, and comforts (1 Corinthians 14:3). In warfare, prophecy can cut through confusion, call someone out of shame, or realign a congregation to God’s priorities. It is not about predicting dates or events for curiosity’s sake; it is about revealing God’s heart for His people in the moment.

Discerning of Spirits – The ability to distinguish between the Holy Spirit, demonic spirits, and the human spirit. In Acts 16:16–18, Paul discerned that a slave girl’s words, though accurate, were driven by a spirit of divination. In warfare, this gift protects the flock from deception and exposes the true source of spiritual activity.

Diverse Kinds of Tongues – Speaking in languages not learned naturally, as the Spirit gives utterance (Acts 2:4). In private prayer, tongues edify the believer (1 Corinthians 14:4) and help us pray beyond our understanding (Romans 8:26). In public ministry, tongues should be accompanied by interpretation for the edification of the body (1 Corinthians 14:27–28).

Interpretation of Tongues – The Spirit-given understanding of a message in tongues so that the church is edified. This turns what would be a mystery into clear instruction or encouragement, enabling the body to respond in faith.

Guardrails for Using These Gifts

In Spiritual Warfare: Born into Battle (p. 117), I stress that these gifts must be exercised in love, under order, and in submission to godly leadership. They are to be tested by Scripture, confirmed by the peace of the Holy Spirit, and stewarded with humility.

Practical Exercise for the Week

Ask the Holy Spirit to highlight one of these six gifts in your life this week. Be intentional about creating space for Him to use you in that gift — whether it’s offering to pray for someone’s healing, sharing a Scripture-based encouragement, or quietly discerning the spiritual atmosphere in a situation and praying accordingly.
