Spiritual Warfare Teaching Series: Gifts of the Holy Spirit – Part 1
Teaching Series: Born into Battle – Equipping the Saints for Spiritual Warfare By: Minister Denise N. Fyffe
Opening Scripture
“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all.” – 1 Corinthians 12:7 (NKJV)
Introduction
This week, I found myself remembering a moment in ministry when the Lord gave me insight about a person I had never met before. It wasn’t something I could have known naturally — it was a detail that opened the door for them to receive prayer and healing. That moment reminded me that spiritual warfare is not fought with human strength alone; it is fought with the supernatural help of the Holy Spirit. In Spiritual Warfare: Born into Battle, I explain that the gifts of the Spirit are not medals to display, but tools to deploy. They are Heaven’s provision for the believer to heal the wounded, expose darkness, and advance the Kingdom.
Why the Gifts Matter in Warfare
The gifts of the Holy Spirit are given “as He wills” (1 Corinthians 12:11, NKJV), and they are meant to profit the whole body of Christ. In warfare, they function like specialized equipment — each one designed for a particular need. Without them, we may still fight, but we fight with limited reach. With them, we can address situations with precision, bringing God’s wisdom, power, and truth into the moment. Paul urges us to “earnestly desire the best gifts” (1 Corinthians 12:31, NKJV) and to operate them in love (1 Corinthians 13). Love is the safeguard that keeps the gifts from becoming about us instead of about Jesus.
The First Three Gifts
Word of Wisdom – This is a Spirit-given strategy for applying God’s will in a specific situation. It is not just knowing what is right, but knowing how and when to act. In warfare, the Word of Wisdom can reveal the right timing for a conversation, the safest route to take, or the precise way to dismantle an enemy’s plan. In Acts 27:23–26, Paul received wisdom that saved lives during a storm.
Word of Knowledge – This is supernatural insight into facts you could not know naturally. In John 4:18, Jesus revealed details about the Samaritan woman’s life, opening her heart to the truth. In warfare, this gift can expose hidden sin, reveal the root of a problem, or confirm God’s presence in a way that strengthens faith.
Gift of Faith – This is not saving faith, but a Spirit-given surge of confidence in God’s power that enables you to believe for the impossible. In Mark 11:22–24, Jesus spoke of faith that moves mountains. In warfare, this gift can stabilize a team in crisis, declare outcomes no one else can see, and embolden believers to act when fear would normally hold them back.
Guardrails for Using the Gifts
In Spiritual Warfare: Born into Battle, I stress that the gifts must be exercised in love, under order, and in submission to godly leadership. They are not for self-promotion or manipulation. Every gift should be tested by Scripture (1 Thessalonians 5:21) and confirmed by the peace of the Holy Spirit (Colossians 3:15).
Practical Exercise for the Week
Choose one of these three gifts and ask the Holy Spirit to make you more sensitive to it this week.
- If it’s the Word of Wisdom, pray each morning, “Lord, give me Your strategy for today.”
- If it’s the Word of Knowledge, ask Him to reveal one truth that will encourage or help someone.
- If it’s the Gift of Faith, declare a promise from Scripture over a situation that seems impossible and thank God for the outcome before you see it.
Reflection Question
- Which of these three gifts do I sense the Holy Spirit stirring in me right now, and how will I intentionally make room to use it this week?
Be Encouraged
These first three gifts are only part of the Spirit’s arsenal. In Spiritual Warfare: Born into Battle, I go deeper into how each one operates in real-life ministry, with examples, prayers, and activation steps. If you don’t yet have your copy, I encourage you to get it and use it as your training manual. The more you understand and practice the gifts, the more effective you will be in bringing Heaven’s solutions into earth’s battles.

The Invitation
I invite you today to take a deep look at yourself and reflect on your life. Are you searching for something more? Are you satisfied with how things are today? Is God calling you to confess your sins, be baptized and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? Have you been ignoring him? What can you do to take the first step?
Trust God to help you with that first step.
