Teaching Series: Born into Battle – Equipping the Saints for Spiritual Warfare

Opening Scripture

“Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” – James 4:7 (NKJV)

Introduction

When the Roman centurion approached Jesus in Matthew 8, he didn’t ask for a long prayer or a dramatic display. He simply said, “Only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.” His confidence came from understanding authority — he knew that Jesus’ word carried weight because Jesus lived under the Father’s authority. In Spiritual Warfare: Born into Battle, I explain that in the Kingdom, authority is not about personality or volume; it is about alignment. The more fully we obey God, the more effectively we can command darkness to yield.

The Link Between Obedience and Authority

Authority in the spiritual realm is jurisdiction — the legal right to act in Jesus’ name. That right is strongest when our lives are submitted to Him. Disobedience, compromise, or rebellion weakens our stance, much like a soldier stepping out from under the chain of command. Hell recognizes jurisdiction; when we live under God’s rule, our words carry Heaven’s backing.

Hearing and Following Orders

The Holy Spirit is our Commander. He speaks through Scripture, the inner witness of peace, godly counsel, prophetic encouragement, and even circumstances that align with His Word. Our role is to hear, weigh, and obey. Delayed obedience often functions as disobedience — the longer we wait, the more ground the enemy can take.

Testing the Promptings

Not every impulse is from God. That’s why we test every leading by the Word, the peace of Christ, and the confirmation of mature believers. True obedience is quick but not reckless; it moves in step with the Spirit, not under pressure from fear or flesh.

Authority Flows from Integrity

Acts 19 tells of the seven sons of Sceva who tried to cast out demons “by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” The evil spirit replied, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” Their lack of relationship and obedience left them powerless. Authority is not borrowed charisma — it is the fruit of a life consistently submitted to God.

Practical Exercise for the Week

Morning Declarations

• Each morning, pray: “Holy Spirit, I submit my mind, will, emotions, and schedule to You today. Give me ears to hear and grace to obey promptly.”
• Keep a small journal of any nudges you sense and how you respond.
• At the end of the week, review what happened when you obeyed quickly versus when you delayed.

Reflection Question

• Where in my life am I resisting God’s orders, and how is that affecting my authority in spiritual warfare?

Obedience is not drudgery; it is your pathway into authority.
