Opening Scripture

“Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” – Luke 10:19 (NKJV)

Introduction

I remember a conversation with a believer who had been praying fervently for a breakthrough but felt nothing was changing. As we talked, it became clear they were asking God to do what He had already given them the authority to do. In Spiritual Warfare: Born into Battle, I explain that many Christians live as though they are powerless, when in reality, Jesus has delegated His authority to them. Authority is not about volume or personality; it’s about legal right — the right to act on behalf of the King.

Understanding the Source of Authority

Spiritual authority originates from God alone. Jesus said, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth” (Matthew 28:18, NKJV). When we operate in His name, we are not acting on our own credentials but on His. This is why the seventy disciples in Luke 10 returned rejoicing that even demons were subject to them — they had experienced delegated authority in action.

In warfare, knowing the source of your authority keeps you from pride on one hand and fear on the other.

Authority vs. Power

In the book, I make the distinction between authority and power. Power is the ability to do something; authority is the right to do it. A police officer may not be physically stronger than a speeding driver, but their badge represents the authority of the law. Likewise, the enemy may have power, but he has no legal right over a believer walking in obedience to Christ. Our role is to enforce the victory Jesus has already won, using the authority He has given us.

The Conditions for Walking in Authority

Authority is not automatic just because we are saved; it is exercised effectively when we are submitted to God. James 4:7 (NKJV) says, “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” Submission aligns us with Heaven’s order, and that alignment is what makes our resistance effective. Disobedience, unrepented sin, or unbelief can weaken our stance, much like a soldier stepping out from under the chain of command.

Practical Exercise for the Week

Each morning this week, read Luke 10:19 and Matthew 28:18–20 aloud. Then pray, “Lord, I submit to Your authority today. I choose to walk in obedience and to enforce Your victory in every area of my life.” As situations arise, pause and ask, “Am I approaching this from a place of authority or from a place of fear?”

Reflection Question

• Am I living as someone who has been given authority in Christ, or am I still waiting for permission to act on what He has already commanded?
